Ok I am wondering if anyone has done this and how hard it is? Im currently a student pilot, 56 hrs, just soloed. I am moving from here in Colorado to Dallas-Ft Worth (Denton) in December. Im seeing that theres no way I will be able to get my pvt before I leave Colorado. Im running a few options through my head and I need opinions from anyone whos done this and what everyone thinks my best option will be.

Option 1: Try and get my pvt, get as much done as possible here from now till dec then finish at another 141 school in the DFW area.

Option 2: Stop now, then pick up up next year after I get settled with my fiance and finish 141 in DFW area.

Option 3: Get as much done now till dec, then come back to colorado for a few weeks next spring/summer and finish then at the same flight school. This is probably the least desirable option, I'll be with my fiance in Denton and really dont wanna have to come back home for longer than a few days at a time.

Any opinions greatly appreciated!

The Big Switch

I was recently in the same type of situation that you were in, the only difference was that I was under part 61 and I switched to a part 141 school. My new school is pretty flexible and let me finish the private under part 61 (since I was at my solo cross country's and didn't have much left). Your situation my be a little more difficult than mine since your already part 141, but since your still in the early part of the game (like me) changing things up right now won't hurt you too bad. In my opinion, the most important thing is that you find a school that you like (for whatever reasons those are, everyone has their opinion to the best school) and that you keep on flying.

I wish you the best of luck and I would only tell you to keep your head up...finishing that private is an awsome feeling.

After seeing lots of students in your position, there are a few things you might consider. First of all, if you just soloed at about 56 hours, it sounds as though you’ve stopped somewhere along the line. So you probably have a good idea what it can do to your progress; once step forward, two steps back. That being said, I’ve always advised my students to proceed as fast as they could. It will be tough, but in the long run it saves money, time, and builds self-confidence. Nothing hurts a student more than being stuck at a given learning level.

So, finish the PPL. If you can, finish your Inst. It would be tough given the time frame. But it would be well worth the effort. Just make sure that the school you go to will hire you as a CFI with a PPL and Inst rating finished. If you can’t get the Inst done, any school should take you on.

If you can’t get your Inst. done, just start building some x-c. And when you do this, get with a CFI so you can get some other req. out of the way.

Switching schools

Try to see if you can finish your Private and Instrument at your current school. Reputable 141 schools are supposed to credit training from one 141 program to another. It really shouldn't be much of a problem making a seamless transition from one to another as long as you have completed your ratings. They may not credit training obtained elsewhere toward their program without a rating.

Focus on finishing your private ASAP before you get rusty. As a pre-private student it will be tough for you to figure out which schools are solid and which are weak so try to get an experienced pilot whose already achieved the aviation related goals you've set for yourself to act as a mentor. Don't get all hung up on 141 vs. 61; focus on getting quality training- the only exception is if you are taking out student loans based on 141 training.

You should probably finish under part 61.

Part 141 only allows the new school to credit you up to half of the NEW SCHOOLS training program.

For the private, the course is usually 35 hours.

This means that you will receive a maximum of 17.5 hours of credit towards the new program.

Start 141 again for your instrument, and really save some hours with the commercial.

61

Just Finish part 61. You're life will be easier and especially since you haven't done any solo cross country work you're all good. I think Part 141 Pilot programs are highly overated myself. I've sat through 141 ground schools and alot of them are a drag and the instructors aren't too excited to be there.

Finish the private as soon as you can, otherwise it's going to cost you more in the long run. Don't worry so much about the 61 vs 141 thing, I've had some great 61 instruction and some lousy 141, so I don't think it matters too much.

Biggest advantage is that you can do the comm in 190 hours theoretically.

Also, you can get an instrument rating without 50 xc.
This can save you a few bucks.

Examining authority is nice also, but many schools do not have it.

I think your current avatar might be playing a curse on you...:D Ok ok.. In all fairness to you and not knowing your situation I would suggest that you finish your pvt where you are at right now. 56 hours is a lot of time in my opinion to have only just "recently soloed" for the first time, something doesn't sound overly right here even if you are only a weekend flyer. Most of my students did the first solo at between 10 to 15 hours. (20 hours tops in rare cases).

I see no reason(s) whatsoever that would prevent you from finishing up between now and December other than finances. 2+ months is quite a bit of time even considering and taking into account the wx problems that you will soon be facing, you should still be able to finish up there.

Do as you wish but if it were me I certainly would do all in my power at 56 hours to finish up asap since this pvt in reality is probably going to end up costing you a fortune when all is said and done.

Even if you can only get up one every 1.5 weeks you shouldn't be taking too many steps backwards. I was able to finish up doctors and businessmen that could rarely fly due to their schedules at between 45 to 60 hours (tops) so get on the ball...!!!

I would make this a priority if I were you. . . You have come this far so why not just put the extra time in and get it done...

56 hours + a first solo isn't the ideal situation to be in imho so I would possibly change a few things up if I were you.
