Do I have to go to my airline's POI, or just any local FSDO?

Does anyone know off hand which FSDO's are friendly towards renewing CFI's for 121 Captain's?

I had a fed on the jumpseat the other day and he renewed mine right there. I dont know if they all do that but he offered.

From what I've been told by the ROC FAA/FSDO is that they do not do CFI renewals for 121 guys (based soley on just being a 121 CA/line pilot) anymore unless you are a check airman/IOE guy or in some cases sim instructor. If you happen to be one of the three more than likely you've been in contact or in the sim while your POI is observing. In this case the POI usually will renew on the spot (if you have the paperwork filled out) so you don't need the FSDO any way.

With that said where I live now (not upstate NY anymore) there is an FAA guy that is also one the local airport bum gang. W(h)eather? your 121 or not he usually takes care of it for us other bums around the airport, but that is because he has known us for years.

Last time I had to renew I waited to the last minute and couldn't get ahold of my FAA guy so I did the American Flyers online thing. 99 bucks and its good for life and easy. Just wiggle the mouse every 3 minutes for an hour then take the stage test. Half day and your done. Print out the complesiont sheet and go to the FSDO. About as painless as could be outside of have an FAA guy do it.

It depends on the FSDO.
MCO says not a chance.
IAD says show me in your FOM where a captain gives instruction or oversees an f/o and they'll do it for you.
The JFK guys do it for the 121 captains but they are also my airline's POI.
Worst case use American Flyers or Gleim Online.
Hope that helps.

Roy.

I saw an inspector do a 121 ramp check, he noted the F/O's CFI expired in two months, he renewed it on the spot. I quess it depends upon who you are dealing with.

What if your CFI has gone past the two year date. Will they renew it then also.

Thanks

If your CFI has expired, you must take a flight test in an aircraft.

Here is the reference in the Inspector Handbook: (you may have to "Prove" you are the PIC of an airline)

FAA Order 8400

Volume 5

Chapter 9

Section 6 RENEWAL OF FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATES

767. CRITERIA FOR RENEWAL.

A. Record as PIC under Part 121. An inspector may renew the flight instructor certificate of a pilot based on his satisfactory record as PIC of an aircraft operated under Part 121, provided the pilot passes any oral test that may be deemed necessary to determine that the applicant has knowledge of current pilot training and certification requirements and standards.

B. Company Flight Instructor or Check Pilot. An inspector may renew a flight instructor certificate if the applicant is assigned duties as a flight instructor or check pilot with an air carrier operating under either Part 121 or Part 135. In some cases, it may be deemed necessary that these applicants demonstrate knowledge of current pilot information for inspectors concerning the renewal of current flight instructor certificates for pilots conducting training and certification requirements and standards by passing an oral test administered by the inspector.

-------------------------------------------
The POI or the Certificate Holding District Office (where your POI has his/her office) usually has the records to prove which seat you are in.

"I quess it depends upon who you are dealing with"

Thats what I think also.

If I do the online thing, can anyone tell me which one is the easiest?

You see, I am a very lazy person and I want an online course where I can just space out and do other things while the clock is running.

I'll call some FSDO's and my POI, and if no luck, then I will need to find an online course.

I have an expired Flight Instructor ticket, I am currently going through the knowledge, operations and standards requirements for approval as a company training pilot on the Mitzu.

Will I still be required to demonstrate profficiency in an aircraft for the renewal?

Can the 135 training pilot documumentation be used in lieu of a formalised flight instructor renewal course?

If I can get a check-airman ticket, I'm assuming the renewal will be automatic, just not sure they need another check airman, instructor pilot position is all I was offered.

Cheers.

Marc.

I have renewed twice. Once at the DFW office and once at the one near ATL. Both were absoulutely painless and actually the guys were more than cordial.

I soon will be going back to FO position with another company and wonder if I can renew before that happens? My CFI actually expires in 5 months. Does anyone have an idea on renewing before the 2 month prior window?

Thanks.

As far as the online thing... the topic has been covered many times around here. The threads usually conclude with the best choise being the American Flyers thing. Thats the conclusion I made after search the treads when I needed to renew and my FAA guy wasn't available. So I took the flightinfo advice. Pretty much as painless as could be outside of have an FED do it. Just do a search.
