Through my certs and ratings I have had more than a few CFI's say, do, or teach things that were flat out wrong. This unproffesionalism bothered me but I had to put up with it for the most part due to no other real options. What really bothered me is that if a CFI is being paid $ to provide instruction they really aught to know what they are teaching...they aught to be PROFFESIONAL!!! I prommised myself when I became a CFI, I would be the proffesional that my students are paying me to be...IE I will know what I'm talking about, continuously refresh my knowledge through reading, understand how to instruct different types of students, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY...ADMIT WHEN I DO NOT KNOW SOMETHING... as opposed to spouting BS. Now that I'm a CFI I still see other CFI's who are now my co-workers who spout some of the most bogus info. Drives me crazy. Scares me to think what they are teaching in the plane. So... I'm starting a rant thread on unproffesional CFI's. What are some of your pet peeves of unprofessional CFI's?

When they show up late or not at all!
When they cancel to go play a sport or go out drinking!
Show up hung over or half asleep or with major hygiene issues
Milking students for more money than necessary!
Never letting the student take the controls
Not letting the student make mistakes "talking to much"
Being rude, arrogant, or a know it all

I could go on with about 3 pages but I will leave it at that!

My only pet peeve is just the nature of the business in that the ones you start out with aren't the ones you finish with.

I guess I've been lucky, or chose a good flight school, but the last several I've had (instrument and multi ratings) have been great. I've gone through at least 2 for each rating.

They've all been young enough to have been either my kids, or a nephew or niece, and had half the TT I do, but they taught me well and I learned something from each one of them.

Professional CFIs? What's that?

How about CFIs that think they're above helping tie down an airplane. When the flight is over they go running inside and leave the student to do all the work. :uzi: CFIs that think they're god and above all SUCK!

I flew with another CFI the other day, not only did he not help pre-flight, get a weather breifing or offer to split the cost (he logged PIC to the flight as well), but he just stood and watched me pre-flight, he came out to the plane 10 mins after I went out and then stood there looking stupid!

We are not above our students. I realize the point of letting them pre-flight without us standing there, but to run off after a flight and not help with the tie-downs or securing the plane is weak! :(

And I can agree with everything NW Pilot says as well!!!

ePilot22, why would you expect your CFI to split costs with you?

I hear ya! My biggest pet peeve was what someone else mentioned, a cfi not helping to tie down a wing. Is it so fargon difficult to tie down 1...ONLY 1 WING! I helped out always..I mean tieing down 1 wing is not going to hurt your students postflight duties yall! Lucky me, I had a great relationship with all of my students..maybe thats why I had a 100% pass rate...Go Me Go Me!

Who's my CFI?

Because he's not my CFI. He's another CFI at the school where I instruct and we just flew to another airport for lunch.

Why is it so weak to not help tie down the A/C???? Is this really what people complain about??

This is not directed at anyone specific!!!!

NW Pilot- I agree with ya. Except the hung-over part-that is when I did my best instructing!!!!!

If I wanted to fit the whole bill, I'd a flown solo. He ask to tag along and I did see any harm in it until he put no effort towards the flight and no offer to split the cost. Oh well, it only takes once.

I don't pay for time I can't log, it's that simple. If you take me for a ride, I'll buy you lunch as a courtesy, but if I wanted to shell out $$$ I'd be flying.

As most of the others have said in this thread so far, most of my gripes concerning flight instructing have to do with other instructors; the lack of professionalism; the disrespect of their students; the incursions into my personal space (especially when I'm trying to get some work done). The worst is on those bad weather days when we're required to be here, but certain narrowminded individuals can't think of anything to do but annoy others. I could watch a hundred different students mess up the same thing a hundred times in a row without batting an eye, but that other stuff starts to get to me.

And just for the record, I most always help my students tie down the airplane. I usually get the right wing and the tail. The only exception is if I really have to pee.

On the other hand, I think I've past the point where I would pay to fly for my own enjoyment, the possible exception being gliders. But since I have a CFI-G, I don't think that'll be an issue.

Biggest Pet Peeve -----> Instructors who forget what it's like to be a student

instructors who don't listen when you talk. actually, it's not just instructors, it's everyone.

also, people who interrupt.

OK- I'll answer this. Ones who think that 600 hrs should get them a job any where else, and bitch when they don't get a call!!!!

You've got to be kidding me??? Superior, is that what you think??? Idiot. I think half the problems you have are because of yourself. You really, really need to RELAX (I read some of your other replies-whew)!!!!! Take a lude, drink a beer, get a girl, whatever it takes. ;) Actually don't, I like reading and replying to people like you.:p

And BTW-where did I say I don't help tie down airplanes?? Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. If another instructor doesn't help, so be it. WHO GIVES A RATS A$$!!!!!!! Doesn't make him any better or worse than the next instructor. Enjoy your flying, I just pray to God that I won't ever have to fly with a tight wad like you.:uzi: :p
And whatever you say in your reply will only be amusing to me, so have at it!!!!

Well said!!!
