If you already are associated with a flight school or club and you are having trouble finding students, instead of going through the troubles of moving (time and financial), consider advertising.

There are several things you can do to get the word out. Consider a small newspaper ad. Put flyers up in grocerys. Have a open house where people can come in and look at the planes... offer demo flights for no profit. Get a website going.

There are a lot of things you can do to expand your student base.

Generaltso has some good points.

Also...

1. You can also check out the thread titled "How to be a successful CFI" in the training section. The initial post in the thread has a few ideas listed there on how to get more students.

2. Go to WWW.NAFINET.ORG and see the CFI jobs posted there. Gotta be a member though...

3. Post yourself on AOPA's CFI listing, GLEIM will also give you a page. Join NAFI and you will be listed through them.

However, the items listed in #3 above are reactive. You will need to pursue the proactive methods listed in the "Successful CFI thread" in the training section along with what generaltso says.

Most all of my students come from word of mouth and networking. I only had about three come from the internet postings. I also find my own by beating "the bushes".

I have gotten some students by word of mouth, all have been BFR's though. I will go look at the post in the training section.

One intrepid CFI in my area left his business card in each and every book in the aviation section at the local Borders bookstore. Probably did the same with all the aviation magazines in the rack, too.

Another put up a "Learn to Fly" flyer in my apartment complex' mailroom and laundry room(s).

Lots of Flight Instructor jobs on planejobs if you are interested. Been a member the last week or so and there are there are two new jobs posted. Good Luck

Sounds like a good idea. Curious, did he make this "Learn to fly" sign or was it from his FBO.

I like the idea with slipping business cards in books at B&N. I think it would be more suitable to have the FBO's phone number on the business card for this purpose, opposed to a cell number. That way, since your name is on the business card, they would call/ask for you at the FBO.

Opinions on this?

I personally have my cell number on my cards. I get direct calls all the time - also referals. If the FBO gets the call then the "closest CFI" might get the call......

If you have a rapoire with the FBO (like I do), then they will bring folks to my door instead of sending them to the local flight school.....
