I received this while attempting to update my app...

System Error

Do I need to create a new application? Seems like it might have dropped it out.

Sounds like they are hiring again. Any estimates on total pilot numbers to hire? Are they for the US domiciles or do you have to start off in HKG? Are pilots starting in the Cargo (744F) or are they getting pax (probably 777) right off the bat?

I don't know where you are getting your info from but NO DE hiring until 2014...They are hiring cadets not DESO or DEFO... good luck

As of right now, no DE hiring at all. We have expanded the intl cadet scheme, and expect to take between 100-150 pilots a year this way. We have significant aircraft ordered, but many don't start arriving for another 5 years. We have 18 more -300ER and 10 747-800F, but that is pretty much it until the 350s start arriving. Also, it's difficult to know how many are for replacements, as that changes every week. Good news is, 80 capts and 130 JFO upgrades next year, so at least some movement again.

Thanks Cpt. Underpants,

I take it the DFO's weekly also mentioned the bit about DE hiring? I wish CX would change their career website to reflect they are only hiring Cadets.

CX's management style is 100% reactive. When they're short of experienced crew, they'll hire DEFO's (maybe even DEC's). It's happened more than a few times in my 20+ years here.

They won't remove the reference to DEFO on the website until the day before they decide they need DEFO's...

Will the 747-800Fs essentially replace the current crop of 744Fs? Will US-based pilots be able to bid the new freighters or are most US-based pilots getting bumped to the 777? Who will likely get to bid the 747-800Fs?

The -800Fs' are replacements for the BCFs' (which will be sold off or incorporated into existing JVs')

The US based F drivers, given the option to transfer to the pax fleet after a 4 year fleet freeze, will be allowed to bid the 777 (or A350) and/or HKG domicile, but many will be refused due to lack of availability of slots on the pax fleets or HKG base slots.

The -800Fs' will be deployed system wide, not just to the US&A routes, so all F drivers will be CCQ onto the -800F.

Think, mate. Put your brain into gear before you start your PC.

I have EVERY airbus from the A310 to the A340-600 on my licence, "typed". PIC. Lots and lots of hours. I speak from experience. Why on earth would I say it was cr@p if I hadn't flown it?

If it makes you feel better...

Hyundai cars are cr@p (yes, I owned one)
HP laptops are cr@p. Ditto.
HP printers are cr@p. Ditto.
Palm pilots are cr@p. Ditto.
GPS' not made by Garmin are cr@p.
If it's not Scottish, it's cr@p.
If it's not DL, it's cr@p. (Thats for General Lee)
If it's not SW, it's cr@p. (Thats for everyone else)
McDonalds are cr@p. Anything.
KFC is cr@p.
JFK is a cr@p airport. (Thats for everyone)

I just couldn't give a cr@p to write more...

Does that make you feel better? See, Im not frog-bashing.

now that is entertaining. If you are ever in MInneapolis, look me up and we will have a beer and lots of laughs thats for sure.

Bump...

I've read this entire thread and have done quite a bit of reading about CX. Would Capt. U. or some other insiders mind to bring this thread back up to date? My obvious questions are if you're hiring and if so are U.S. bases open? Selection process? Thanks in advance.

US bases haven't had a bid in about 3 years.... Hiring like gangbusters for the second officer position. No direct entry first officer positions are being filled but the pool is still maintained.

Just curious how it is to fly for CX as an American? There's definitely a slight anti-American feel (particularly for ex RJ pilots) at EK and I've heard it's much worse at CX. Any truth to the rumor?

This Cathay ad popped up today but doesn't have a date on it so it's hard to know how current it is:

http://www.aviationjobs.me/2014/12/...onal-candidates-cathay-pacific-hong-kong.html

But, the program is listed on their careers website:

Advanced Entry Programme

This is a 31-week programme for people who possess an ICAO CPL and have in excess of 250 hours flight time in specified categories.

http://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_HK/about-us/careers/jobs-in-the-air/pilots.html

P.S. OK, if you drill down to the app itself, this appears. So, at least they appear to be doing some hiring...maybe ? But likely no more than an idle curiosity to most people here:

We are currently accepting applications for Second Officers based in Hong Kong via the Transition Training, Advanced Entry and Cadet Pilot Programmes. Kindly note only applicants who hold a Hong Kong permanent ID card are being considered for the Cadet Pilot Programme.

It is a tough interview, at least it was in 2005.

A fairly difficult written test and a round of stump the dummy questions. I thought I was back in USAF flight school and if I got one question wrong, it was an unsat for the day and you didn't fly.

I didn't go to the second interview as I took my present corporate gig instead.

Yes, that's what lots of people said. I know a guy with pretty serious credentials who didn't make the cut.

I'd like to know how much they expect a 250 hour pilot to know. If they concentrate on academics, I guess they could expect a lot of book knowledge ?

I think it would be very difficult for a low time pilot. Unless they tailor the interview for the experience level. I studied for months for the test and questions.

Neither one of my interviewers was Mr. Chuckles, I tell you that. I did not get a warm and fuzzy at any point during the interview.

I was extremely surprised to have passed the test as well as I did and to invited to the next round. But the 2005 salary offered was a hell of lot less than I was offered by my current job, so adios Cathay...

Stuff like that puts a negative face/perception on an airline. And the interviewers are the face of the airline at that point...in those circumstances.

I can't see any advantage in interviewers behaving like that vs being cordial, relaxed and trying to put applicants at ease. Make the testing as hard as they want but...
You young hard chargers can go slay the dragons. I'm here rootin' for ya.
[I bet people are still knocking down the door to get in there, though]

When I was on active duty, my goal in life was to fly the 747-400. Now I couldn't care less and a new Gulfstream has much better avionics anyway.

Just pay me and hopefully I will survive to retire again.
