Thanks for the reply. Just trying to gather all the information to make the best decision I can.

That is wise, but the age old adage is too get the job offer first, then decide. I'm sure they will present the compensation package at the interview.

The following was taken off of PPrune. Not sure that it is accurate and I accept no blame if it isn't. Notice that this is for Hong Kong based "B" scale pilots. Oh, how I'd love to be a Cathay A-Scale Captain. The first set of figures are in Hong Kong Dollars.

Also be aware once you upgrade to a position. your pay for that position starts at "year 1".

Does not work like airlines in the States where if you've been with a company for say, 18 yeas...then you're a "18 year captain".

Thanks TP and Tri Jet, This info helps a lot. If you spent a few years on the Freight side and then were able to transfer to the pax side, would you then be a Junior, Regular, or Senior F/O ?

Thanks.

I believe the conversion factor on the rest of this thread was around 7.8 to the US dollar the time of posting.

Does anybody know how many they plan to hire this year? Or is there a total they are trying to replace for retirements?

Also, I have heard they are getting approved for a mod to the 747-400 that would allow the ac to go from passenger to freighter, is that correct? If so how many are they planning on getting? Thanks!

Start In April

Guys,
I interviewed in May then August for the second interview in Hong Kong and got the call In October for an April class date.
I can tell you that the interview is VERY technical, however some of the stuff there is no way you could know unless you had a PHD in aerodynamics or weather, and that's comming for an aerospace major. They asked me what the water temp had to be in order for a typhoon to form, what temp jet fuel frezzes at both with and without prist, or how about,
"Describe Scholer's loop and it's relationship to the INS drift equation."
I probably only got about 2/3 of the questions right and I still got the job. I think the 747-200 sim and the cocktail party have more to do with getting hired then anything.
The pay is better then ANY American airline hiring and the upgrade time is pretty short. You also only work about 10-14 days a month, get paid a salery and get 42 days of vacation a year. As a first officer you start on the 747-400F and can switch to PAX after 3 years. If you decide to ever live in Hong Kong they will more then make it worth your while with a 4500USD housing allowence and send you kids to private school, plus a 3 month bonus if the company makes a profit.
The PAX bases are SFO and LAX and the cargo bases are LAX, CHI, JFK, and ANC.
If you don't meet the mins for First Officer you can get picked up for relief pilot, but will have to move to HK right away.
Overall I inerviewed with SWA, JB, and others and I can tell you Cathay is the classiest most professional airline out there hiring.

Is it possible to stay on the freighter side for 20 years. And how senior are the US bases on the pax side? And are there jumpseats available to commute?

Kiss your jumpseat privileges good bye if you happen to have in your possession a cathay ID. they don't reciprocate to anyone.

the "jumpseat" on the CX planes are available for anyone in the company (I think)..but you gotta have already purchased an ID90 ticket to occupy it.

I read somewhere that ATA will let the cathay guys with an FAA ticket a ride, but last I heard, ATA don't come to HKG.

Yes, ATA will take a jumpseater from Cathay AS LONG AS they are an FAA certificated airman. But like you say, we don't go to Hong Kong. Hawaii is as far west as you can get on us. But we will still take you to any of the ever dwindling number of cities we do serve.

I was told that you can stay on the freighters forever for all they care.

And as far as jumpseating on CX, the answer I was given was not as rosy as the picture you paint of "anyone in the company" getting on it. Of course my question was strictly about the freight side, maybe pax side is different. I asked elsewhere if you could get on the CX freighter in ORD and ride it to ANC if you lived in Chicago but were based in ANC. The answer I was given was basically "no, don't count on that to get to work".

Also was told that Chicago was all filled up, with quite a list of people waiting to get in, and also that DFW and ATL will start soon, possibly they will be bases.

Quite unlikely in the near future. DFW and ATL, once served directly within company, ie no sub-contracting, will be a limited schedule to commence the service with.

So you can jumpseat on Cathay correct? And you could commute to Hong Kong?

yeah dude, you can jumpseat...for 280 bucks!! (SFO-HKG-SFO)

I once thought it was a ripoff that NWA charged me a $5 "jumpseat fee" down in bangkok.

So how long is the upgrade - how easy to bid different cities. Do you jump from junior to senior on the payscale once the years delinated are completed

holy cow.. 5 bux!! you know what you can get for 5 bux in bkk?! well, i know you do..

how long ago did this happen?

So Cathay charges you to fly even if you work there?

yes dude, "non-rev" travel takes on a different meaning in Hong Kong.

How senior is LAX on the pax side. And what kind of schedules are on the freighter side. And do they care if your in the reserves?

LAX isn't all that senior. A buddy of mine got LAX as his first base on the PAX fleet after his three years flying cargo. I got "assigned" LAX on the cargo fleet, it was either that or ANC. I don't know what the schedule is like, but you only work an average of 13 days per month.
