dash8driver and vik, both of you are fools.

My son is one of those "retards" you find it so amusing to mock. How about we get together somewhere and we will see if you have it in you to call him a "retard" to his face.

dash8driver, I have many more problems to worry about other than your signature. Like dealing with jerks like you who like to call my son a "retard" with the anonomity of the internet to hide behind.

Have a nice life.

apparently you dont...

you just contradicted yourself here. no wonder you have noclue. take your time, read it again.. it has nothing to do withthe efforts they put into the olympics.. it has everything to do withpeople like you that like to argue.

why do you put the word retard in quotes? its being used in its proper meaning.. try using www.m-w.com sometime.

oh yes.. the whole reason i got an internet account was so i could logonto message boards and call your son a retard, give me a break..thatsa real stretch. show me where i addressed your son? andshow me where i used any terms that defy their definition?

playing the "my son" card is pretty weak. like it wouldnt matterto you otherwise. you should be ashamed for using your son as aweapon.

the world is a scary place.. the internet has opened up the outsideworld to people who used to hide on the inside. like the outsideworld, you may see things that you dont like. fortunately, thevery smart people who invented computers thought of this right from thebeginning. with all their foresight, they installed a device tohelp you deal with the things that you dont like on the internet. its that little button on the front of your computer (|). pressthat and it all magically goes away.

sincerely,

dash8driver

dash8driver:

According to every dictionary I have ever read, including your m-w.com website, "retard" is considered to be "often offensive". So, no, you did not use any word contrary to it's meaning.

If the point of your sig was merely to make a point about arguing, and not to make fun of people, then you could have said any number of things, such as:

Arguing on the internet is like wrestling a pig, after a while you start to think the pig enjoys it.

Arguing on the internet is like yelling into a mirror, the other person just keeps yelling back.

et cetera, et cetera.

As far as using my son as a weapon, that was not my point. I mentioned him to illustrate to you that while you may think that this is all in fun for you, the word "retard" is in fact offensive and you don't really know your audience while putting posts on the internet.

Enjoy the attention.

I make fun of everyone equally, not just "retards."

Of course, every joke I make will be against someone, somewhere.

I don't discriminate -- I make fun of everyone equally including myself.

Also, recognize that this is a message board and people say things onhere they wouldn't say in real life. I would never call your son aretard to his face or even behind his back. Neither would d8d.

Lastly, we never called your son a retard. We don't even know who yourson is so how did we call him a retard and hide behind the Internet?

I hope this puts your mind at ease.

exaggeration... says "sometimes". nice try. the use wasnt contrary to the definition either.

oh this line is so tired... "why didnt you say it this way". because ichose to say it a different way you would.. so what. why should ipander to special interest groups over a simple post? i see youhave no feelings for the people that might own pigs and take offense toyour suggestion.

your suggestions are fine.. you can go ahead and put those in your signature.

ok.. my turn for the "if your point was....why not say" second-guessinggame. instead of all the insults. why didnt you just say"hey, you probably dont know this.. but i have a son that is <insertcurrent PC term here> and your signature hurts my feelings"? or something along those lines.

you're right.. i dont know my audience.. its impossible to tell.. howdo you expect someone to pander to everyone? or is it only youthat matters?

i think you've used him as a weapon because of whats important to you..not to him. maybe you think he's substandard and have to wagesome crusade, i dont know. but the imporant thing is that he'shappy, and that you treat him like a human. as long as he'shappy.. it shouldnt matter what goes on around in the world.

dash8driver said: "exaggeration... says "sometimes". nice try. the use wasnt contrary to the definition either."

You are looking at the definition for the word "reatrded." I was using the the definition for the word "retard", which is the root of the word retarded, also it is the word used by Vik. I did not exaggerate at all. Also, I never said you used a word contrary to it's definition, I said you did NOT use a word contrary to the definition: "So, no, you did not use any word contrary to it's meaning". See?

You are obviously being contrarian and intransigent. Insulting to people with pigs? Please. You wouldn't make some racially insulting comments and try to explain it away with something like "why should i pander to special interest groups". It is obvious you are not going to change your signature, even if you wanted to you wouldn't do it now because it would look like you are "giving in".

You accuse me of being on some kind of crusade, I can assure you that is not the case. You would not believe how common the words retard (in an offensive manner) and retarded (in an offensive manner) and "retard jokes" (in an offensive manner) are if you look. If I were on a crusade I would be calling Boeing and complaining because at top of descent my 737 PFD says "retard". I do realize that it is a perfectly acceptable word with perfectly acceptable meanings, in addition to the offensive ones.

I, in turn, accuse you of being on a crusade against political correctness. You perhaps have some kind of "shock jock" dreams, that is to say, you are getting some kind of thrill from being purposely outlandish. I don't know you personally, but I am quite sure you would not just go up to some person and use an offensive word, in an offensive manner, to their face.

You must realize that the picture and accompianing text would be offensive. The word retarded, in itself not disparaging, is used in a disparaging fashion. So, no, you do not have to pander to special interest groups, you should just use some common sense.

We can go back and forth forever. I will take a page from your book. Hey, dash8driver, you may not know this, but I have a son with Down Syndrome and I feel that your signature is offensive to him and what he has and will accomplish.

How disappointing to think that this was going to be developing into a neat thread about LBFMs, and some dickhead who's pissed off at the world because his son is a retard decides to take it out on everyone else (sigh).

I will get this back on track

During the interview, do they bring several lbfm's in to choose from or do you get assigned one or two? What are they looking for, technique or endurance. I got this little move I like to call "sushi roll"....

Eternal FO

If you actually get the job and your American or Canadian, good luck getting a command appointment. Many American get sent back after training and that's even if your lucky enough to get recommended for the left seat. Then you gota fly with stuffy Brits, who can't seem to get over their stiff upper lip, for the rest of your short and stresfull career (mandatory age 55 retirement).

There are a BUNCH of Canadians in the left seat, both on the passenger and freighter side. So that statement is not completely accurate.

stayseated,
you're going to be in a wrong track if you do that "sushi roll". sushi roll is not popular in hong kong only "egg roll".

Anyone know where I can find pilot pay years 1-10 both seats?

Looking into it and trying to find out if it would be worth the QOL jump; I'm not really interested in going PAX, just stay on the freighter side here in the U.S.

Additionally, is the upgrade time longer for the freight side than pax? Or necessarily harder to get the upgrade appointment?

Thanks in advance - glad this thread is getting back on a more civil track...

Lear 70,

The upgrade is quicker for the cargo side but the pay is less too.
If you get a hold of that book by Ca. XYZ, it will give you the information about the payscale up to 17 years.

hey any guys from cathay,
whats the deal with life over there? What kind of trips and does anyone know about their bases in the states? I looked at their website, but I dont want to get all worked up if a la base would never be an option. Any info appreciated.

I know the only gig you can pick up state-side is on the freighters, bases in LAX, ANC, ORD, and JFK. Lots of stuff on www.pprune.com, do a search on "Cathay freighers" or "cathay freight" and you should have enough to keep you busy for two or three hours (at least that's how long it took me). Watch the dates, some of it is pretty old.

For the rest, I STILL can't find pay rates. The XYZ book doesn't have current U.S. Freighter pay rates (or at least that's what I'm told). I'm gonna put the same request on PPrune and see what comes up, but if anyone here knows, please chime in!

Thanks!

I was told by a friend who was hired by them, that it is always a good idea to fill out the application. (He started at 250 hours!) Just keep updating it religously every 6 months. Eventually your file will get thick enough they will give you an interview just to make space in their filing cabinet. In every letter or application emphasize that you would only want to fly for them. That even offered the no.1 seniority at United you would still rather fly as an SO for Cathay. They want someone whose sole goal in their career is to fly for them. Make them think you get a chubby just looking at a aircraft with their paint scheme. Make sure you save all your correspondence with them (they will have a copy of it in the interview) and be able to explain how every career move was made to get a step closer to working for Cathay.

Good luck!

Cathay Minimums for Second Officer (cruise relief pilot, Hong Kong base) Interview invites are 3000 TT, with 1000 Turbine. These numbers are minimum requirements to be offered interviews, not averages. The above is correct, Cathay is primarily looking for people who wish to join them, and only them. They do not look for people who are looking to join, kill some time, and then jump ship back Stateside. They do not however, use a file cabinet to store applications. They use a mainframe computer which tracks every correspondace you have with them via PRN, or personal reference numbers. At your interview, they will have all correspondance you have ever had with them. Also, don't forget that Cathay's primary requirment is age commensurate with experience, ie. the older you are, the more hours you will need to be competitive. This is a published requirment.

Good luck.

CX Pay

I don't know about SO pay, but Direct Entry FO's on the freighter start at $61,308 with a $7,000 or so year raise each year. Full medical for you and family from day one.

Are the requirements for DEFO on the cargo side higher?

Just saw they're going to be at the Pilot Connections job fair in Phoenix on Feb 19...
Its amazing, I think this is their first time doing pilot's job fair especially in the US. That tells you that they need pilots, I heard that they are busy hiring due to expansion and retiring. I hope we all get in, especially me because this is my ticket back home.

Just got the call for a Cathay interview in April/NYC. I've read all the threads on FlightInfo and PPrune, but still unable to find salary scales for the freightor division (North America/U.S) Someone posted a starting salary of $61,700, but very interested in salary after that. Captain pay on the freighter, and what position and pay you'd be looking at if you decided to go to the Pax side after 3 years. There's got to be someone who knows.

My Info:

App in for 1.5 years. Last updated about 4 months ago.
5500 TT
2200 PIC
4000 Turbine
3000 Jet
800 Jet PIC

Thanks

Congrats on the call for an interview, now I suggest you study your butt off for the next month. I would also suggest you get over the pay rate issue. Yes, it is important that they pay a decent wage and you wouldn't want to put all that work in for a job that paid sub-standard wages but you don't want the attitude that you are in it for the money to show up at the interview. Cathay is one of the top 3 airlines in the world and their starting pay as a freighter F.O. is higher than any other major airline's starting pay, and that is known as their "C" scale. The "B" scale F.O.s in Hong Kong make sustantially more.
