Last time I heard it was not a good idea to work their due to their labor/mgmt issues??

SGU,

I thought about that at first, but I have talked to enough people that say it is truly no worse than being
at a US airline.

AMR and its pilots have had some of the worst labor relations in history. I can name a few times I have been told
"If you don't like it grieve it!!". Lastly I just had a contract I had no deisre to vote yes to shoved down my throat.

So in the grand scheme of things is Cathay truly that bad? They are making money, offer a quality product, and seem to have great biz plan(lots of expansion, in cargo and pax side).

I've heard the interview is pretty technical. Know a lot about what ever aircraft you are currently flying - be able to show you fully understand how everything works.

Good luck

P.S. Do you know what the schedules are like in the freighter division for the 744? How many days home per month?

On Your Six,

I heard it is very technical, have a lot of gouge. In fact the lady who called me to set up the interview said "get a hold of handling the big jets" (darn expensive). It covers heavy jet areodynamics etc. Also have much on the operation of a rolls royce engine. She was very direct, to say Cathay is a technical airline, and they like their pilots to be the same.

I have heard mixed about the cargo side. Sounds like pref bidding. A week on week off. US domciles are ORD, LAX,JFK,ANC. There has been a lot of discussion on PPRUNE. Upgrade time on the freight side to command is down to about 3-4 years.

How do you like flying that global, looks NICE!!;)

AAFlyer,

Do you know if Cathay makes you resign your seniority
and call back rights at your furloughed airline?

Also do you know what the pay scale is for a Freighter 744 F/O?

Thanks.........

AA Flyer, one more,

Will anyone consider us scabs if we want to go work for Cathay?

I'm serious...I still would like to return to my furloughed airline given the choice,
but for now we all gotta keep pressing forward cause you never know.

but......I don't want to do something now that will haunt me for the rest of
my flying career.

Thanks

NO. There is no recruitment ban in place at present. See http://bbs.hkalpa.org/public/default.htm. You're going to have to read a little, but it's there. Look for key words like "Recruitment Ban" and "49'ers" (no inverted commas).

BZZZT. Cathay requires a resignation letter and acceptance from your company.

About USD70K per annum year one.

If you want a shot at actually PASSING the interview, you'll need to get into the books. Make sure you know about these issues:

  1. Hong Kong post 1997.
  2. CX Freighters and it's symbiosis with CX.
  3. Aerodynamics. Not the "aero-d for dummies" version that the "Get your ATPL in a weekend" schools sell, but some real stuff. Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators and AP3456 come to mind.
  4. Fast Jet issues.
  5. High Bypass Large fans, RR in particular.
  6. HKAOA.
  7. CRM.
  8. CX management, shareholdings and relationship with Peking.
  9. Route structure of all fleets.
  10. LBFM's
Good luck. It's not for everyone, but I wouldn't change it for anything, thanks.

LBFMS!

Do they require a performance during the interview? I knew they were technical but this is getting rediculous! :)

AAflyer,

The Global is a blast - wow is it automated! Very comfortable flight deck and long, long legs.

Cpt. Underpants,

Thanks for the detailed interview points. Very generous of you.

LBFM's

Look outside the fence at Subic Bay or in any bar in BKK...

It's becoming an aviator's term--not specific to the military anymore.TC

P.S.--"you want long time or short time, Captain?" :D

Five dolla, make you holla!

This sounds like urban legend, but it's not.

A CA I flew with interviewed with a rather popular freight company that just happens to have a sizeable operation in the orient. The particular CA was former navy and spent alot of time deployed in the orient on the P-3. When the interview was over and the HR rep walked out, the line CA's doing the interview jokingly asked him "Bob (not his real name), do you know what an LBFM is?"
