I was just sitting here in my wonderful little world here and watching the weather up in the North East today and a question about airlines and their training came to mind...
What companies spend the extra money to train their pilots to fly ( or watch the autopilot fly) CAT III approaches???
I know Delta trains their pilots if the aircraft is able to do it (I don't think the 727 can do it).
Does Jet Blue spend the extra money or Air Train?
What airplanes can do it?--I don't think CRJs can do it because they don't have autothrottles.
I got to do one a couple of years ago in Atlanta in Delta's 757 #1 simulator in their training center...it was pretty cool to just sit there and watch the centerline lights go wizzing by one at a time.

Any stories?

All Horizon aircraft can or will be doing CatIII's

with the exception of the F28'a which will be gone soon.

All the DHC200 are HGS equiped and fly CatIII to 600 RVR. Over half the DHC400 have the HGS the rest will be in sometime next year....also to 600 RVR.

The RJ is awaiting approval. Probably by next winter.

Alaska 73's use the HGS for CatIII and the MD are autoland.

Southwest uses HGS.

JetBlue is approved for Cat III down to 1000 RVR, for now. We can't shoot them to a contaminated runway, either. Wet, dry, or no going. A few other limits, all of which really don't matter for this discussion.

Kennedy's Cat III Runway (4R) has had the approach decommissioned due to resurfacing of the runway. It has been scheduled for re-opening, but I forget right now when that's supposed to be.

Let me know if I can be of any more help.

Not all CAT III's are flown on the auto pilot. The 727's at UPS are CAT III and are required to be hand flown. Also, they do not have auto throttles. It is done on an HGS system and it is amazing!!:)
