exempt by being in uniform and with proper ID
I was in this profession when you were probably in diapers. As a professional, my security director published directives that you must be in uniform to expect the exemption, so I comply. I did see the letter from TSA to the airlines to this effect. Now what this profession does not need are people who want to dance around politically sensitive issues such as this. I was pleased that we were exempt by being in uniform and with proper ID. If this gets out of hand soon it will be allowed for crews only working a flight or not at all. This crap about changing back into civvies and waving at TSA is stupid beyond all belief. I don't care for TSA any more than the next pilot, but I do have less hassles by following directives. Grow up !!!!
Anyway I asked where the rule was that a ID carrying pilot hast to have a uniform on, he said its on the TSA website. I did a search andI couldnt find it. Does anybody have a link to this rule on the TSA site?
This is what I do. If they want to waste my time I'll waste their time. I make them watch me take my epiluets, wings, name tag, and tie out and put them on in front of everyone. I haven't really had this problem anywhere except SEA so far.
There have been problems in LAS but they should be okay now. Lots of AWA commuters so we jump on our chief pilots whenever there's issues. Last week I went through security for the D concourse, where the TSA knows that AWA doesn't operate from, without any issue. The rule doesn't state the pilot must be on duty, just in uniform. No surprise the commuting pilot rule is not consistently followed. A couple months ago I went to Vegas to lose money and traveled in uniform each way.
Flip a small round coin container upside down before and after your bag.
Go through the detector... Stop and smile at the lady running the x-ray machine with your crew badge showing and say "hey how's it going" or something very nice.
EWR...TSA Delta concourse has been the worst I have seen...
God forbid you carry your clear ziplock with a 3oz or less bottle of anything unless it has a factory label on it. "crest" etc.
I had a couple "container store" clear leak proof generic bottles that were 1.5 oz that they made me throw out because they couldn't verify what was in it...(no label) The yahoos in ASE are almost as bad.
I recently commuted out of uniform. I had the 3 oz of shaving cream, a mini tube of toothpaste and a travel stick of mennen spped stick. It fit in a 1/2 quart bag, and I got yelled at by the security checkpoint gestapo for not having it in a 1 quart size bag instead of a 1/2 quart size bag. How stupid can they really be?
How about surround your bags with one of those TSA dog bowl dishes on each side?

Logic like this makes sense when you consider the talent the TSA hires. Most of the public is exceedingly overqualified. It's not hard to imagine the boredom we would endure after 1/2 hour scanning bags and shoes. The TSA probably has a pre-employment cognitive test for applicants. Those scoring higher than a baggage cart are encouraged to apply at Burger King.
So next time you are harassed at a TSA checkpoint, have pity on the screeners, at least they're working and not on a government entitlement program.
Make small talk like "I love your nails, how did you get them so long and curled?", or, "I think that NASCAR tattoo is really cool, where can I get one?"
Do this and perhaps they'll be so distracted, they won't see your non-compliant items.
Good luck,
See my post, #40. Crashpad edited his post, #38, for reasons of national security. Maybe I should do the same...
Nah, I'll leave that up to the mods and the MIBs. Hang on, there's someone at the door...
It can't be that big of a secret, especially when I figured it out without anybody telling me.
