FYI. Capt Haynes wasn't asking anything. The United Flight Attendant Union originaly put out the all call for help. ALPA didn't even ask for a month or two after. People who care are the ones who post this stuff here. I have no idea what the bennefits were for him however he retired in the early 90s. That was a couple contracts ago.

"I too think this is some hoax to be asking underpaid regional pilots to fund his family bills."

You're right, it's a hoax. And the worst part is they've got the National Foundation for Transplants involved too! Dastardly!! As previously posted, if you can't afford $5 (or whatever you want to donate!) to help out a man who has helped countless pilots, don't pay it.

Aren't those foundations for needy families?? I would hope so. Not sure why Multi-Millionaires are able to tap into the charity?? Go figure?

Hey ,

Here is an excerpt from an interview about the situation. Just because someone had a career at a Major airline doesn't mean they are all millionaires. Captain Haynes has had his share of heart ache, we do not know his full financial situation...it is sick to see some of the heartless A$$holes on this board. Heck, I'm furloughed and managed to find $100 (months ago, this has been going on for a few months now) for this worthy cause......trying to help save a life. If you can give, great! If not, it is not a problem.....but you don't have to say things that might activly work against the life of his daughter.

From the interview.................

"People say, 'Well are you embarrassed they're taking advantage of your name to do this?' " Haynes said, "And I say no, I'm glad I can help under the circumstances because if we didn't have that (name recognition) we'd be in a world of hurt."

His family has seen its share of hurt. Al's wife died four years ago. His oldest son was killed in a motorcycle crash two years before that. Now his daughter is fighting for her life.

NBC Nightly News just ran a story on this tonight. The daughter had a successful surgery two weeks ago. The funds raised came predominately from the survivors of flight 232.

So, no, it wasn't a hoax.

I've met Capt Al Haynes a few times.
Before his daughter was ill he donated every penny of every speech he did to a few different scholarship funds.
One of them happened to be the Jerry Kennedy Aviation Career Advancement Scholarship.

I made a donation for his daughter and got something in the mail from the foundation. They said it was the most successful fund raising campaign in the history of their foundation. They raised more money than his daughter needed and the remainder will go to other individuals who can not afford their operations!

For those of you who are trying to tear this guy down, get a life!
He's is a better man than you will ever be!

There has to be a good outcome to this. It would not be right any other way. My donation will be sent.

It is a shame that those who moderate this web site cannot at least edit the dispicable trash from this thread. I am ashamed at several of you that would try to justify not helping another human being by bringing in what you think is his finacial value.

I am ashamed of these moderators as well to allow this behavior.

Al was my Little League coach, he was a great role model and now I'm fortunate enough to share a neighborhood with him. Part of what makes him a great man is his ability to pull people together to make something happen (remember Sioux City? He wasn't alone in that cockpit). The humility you must possess when asking for help keeps many from making the request, often with less than desireable results... Al isn't one of those types. He asked for assistance because it was the right thing to do...and his community rose to the occasion. We should admire such a humble man.

This has to be the most depressing thread I've ever read. I can't believe that a group of airline pilots, who should all know full well and good what Capt Al Haynes did and what kind of man he is, could respond with such callus and disrespect for what he and his family are going through. Way to make us all look like a bunch of a$$holes. Guess the days of airline pilots having class and gentlemenly are over. And you wonder why us regionals pilots have such bad reputatoins. Looks like we deserve them.
