CAPT. AL HAYNES' DAUGHTER
NEEDS YOUR HELP
Capt. Al Haynes' daughter, Laurie Arguello Haynes, is in need of a monstrously expensive bone-marrow transplant to stave off a life-threatening illness. According to messages on the internet, the available insurance is falling about $156,000 short.

Pilots don't need to be told about Capt. Haynes' tireless efforts to disseminate the lessons learned when his United DC-10 suffered a total loss of control systems over Iowa back in 1989. You may not have heard that the captain of the DHL A-300 that was struck by a missile departing Baghdad a few weeks back had recently been to one of Capt. Haynes' presentations and used the knowledge gained there to save his aircraft and crew when it too lost all hydraulics. So, Al Haynes is still saving aviators' lives and maybe now is a good time to stand and deliver for him.

If you visit http://www.transplants.org you will find a really easy credit card-based system where you can make a targeted donation to support Al's daughter's marrow transplant.

This country is seriously screwed up when people's lives depend on their ability to privately raise money through websites like this.

I guess it would be better to live in a country that you needed permission from some government dude to have the operation and that dude could reject you due to many reasons without any avenue for appeal. He could even reject you for the life saving operation because you might be too old and he believes your wont be able to contribute to society long enough. That happens today in Canada and England and other modern countries with socialized medicine systems.

This country pioneered the operation we are talking about. I have not heard of many pioneering medical breakthroughs that have originated from a government run system.

There is one common factor of every single government run system on the entire planet earth today; they are all in trouble or about to implode.

Iceland has had government owned and operated medical system for over 70 years. It is shown as a model system. Yet my mother in-law was thrown out of the hospital with a terminal infection, they needed the bed. Their where plenty of beds just not enough people to take care of the patients. Icelanders come to the United States to get operations and treatment because they can NOT afford to wait for the treatment in Iceland. England has the same problem with their National Health System. I believe just last year there was a big uproar about a woman that had to wait so long for treatment that she died from the illness that was completely curable with timely treatment.

Iceland has one of the worlds leading genetic research labs. Privately owned!

The United States has some of the most advanced medical research going on right now. All in the hands of privately owned institutions.

One of the biggest hospital organizations in the world is in the United States. It is called the Veterans Medical system or something like that. Ever been in a VA hospital? Government owned, government run. The only way to describe that system is it is FUBAR.

If you want to see how good the medical system is in Canada, check out the hospitals along the US side of the border and see how many Canadians are getting medical treatment HERE because they have to wait in line in Canada for treatment. Sometimes they have to wait to long for simple elective surgery for a condition that was not life threatening but is now fatal.

Have you ever lived in a country that has gov socialized medicine? I have lived in a socialized medicine country. Works well, until you have too many people and not enough doctors or hospitals. Why should a young person go to med school and make only the wages the government wants to pay them.

It is too bad that all you saw in my post was something negative and had to bitch about it. Instead of stating that all of us pilots owe this Man a great deal. They will be talking about Capt Haynes long after you and I have reverted to room temperature.

The people that survived that horrible crash did not complain about the medical system in this country when they heard about his daughter’s illness. They have all stepped up to the plate and have contributed. In fact it is a survivor that started this campaign.

How about getting off your high liberal horse, grow up and donate some money to this family. And if you don’t like my opinion tough truth hurts don’t it.?

Who suggested socialized medicine? All I'm saying is that there's something seriously screwed up when people have to beg for donations to afford life-saving medical procedures. I think that's an understandable reaction. Suppose it was your daughter. Would you think the situation was acceptable? I suspect most people would not.

Pointing this out doesn't make someone a liberal. There's nothing wrong with wanting your country to improve. If we all meekly accepted the status quo we'd still be living in caves.

Are you serious or is this a hoax? If so, it's very illegal!
$156k to a retired UAL pilot is chump-change. We all know how tight they can be, but even this would be a new low for UAL pilots if they expected others to take pity only their bad fortune and financial plight.

I agree.

A retired UAL Capt from the old days who cant come up with 156K? gotta be more to this story....

If true it sounds like a sad situation -- but lets please stop the internet begging.

I would think with all the time he's spent on the lecture circuit, he's bound to have a bunch of cash..

I would tend to have to agree to the above.. I am sure he is not doing the speaking out of the goodness of his heart. When I first saw him make the plea for help on CNN this was the first thought that came to my mind. I would almost bet any amount of money that he is compensated quite well for the speaking engagements that he frequently does, not to even mention his retirement, investments, etc, etc, etc.

Capt Otto Coarsen Needs our help too!

His electric/gas bill this month is over $156.00 and internet sources say his available resources put him about $102.00 short.

No offense, maybe he should ask for money from some of the 100 or so lives that he saved that day. They might owe him something, but I don't think I nor the rest of us actually do. I understand the reasoning behind a post like this, but in all reality, we don't owe him a cent....People save lives everyday...

Actually all the monies that were paid to him were donated to the victims and victims famlies. Many speeches were given for free. And he retired long before the new UAL contract with all the huge raises.

Maybe some of his retirment money was spend burying his wife and son who died a few years before. How is this any diferent that giving to the Colgan Families?

I truely hope Captain Haynes doesn't read this thread. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves for liking this guy to an internet begger.

My sentiments exactly McPickle. Well spoken.

If you don't want to donate, don't. But Until you are in his shoes, keep your opinions and conjecture about his financial status and motives to yourself. There's nothing quite like coming to flightinfo to see a bunch of ignorant jacka$ses kick a respectable man during his most desperate hour.

Can't believe this!

Sure glad I don't need your help for my daughter. With freinds like you, who needs enemies. What a bunch of excrement. Good Day!

I wish the best for his Daughter too. Isn't the Lump Sum retirement option for United like 3 or 4 Million to those who retired when Capt Haynes did? I too think this is some hoax to be asking underpaid regional pilots to fund his family bills.
