Have a bet with a case of beer on the line.....

If you have a commercial liscence and go for a type rating in a bandit for a cargo company do you need your atp?

Basically can you get a type without an atp? If it is possible are there any restrictions on the operation?

Thanks.

I'm gonna die laugh'in tonight.

What are the CFI's teaching these days.

Do they talk about the FAR/AIM at all.

Wait, I've had to many deers, this must be flame.

You could add a 747 type to a private cert if you had the money...no requirement for a certain level of certification to have a type, just limited to that level for operations...

No, Yes, Yes. You can get a type on a private w/ an instrument rating. Without an ATP you cannot act as PIC in 121 or 135 operations. If you can get the insurance, you can fly your CE500 with a pvt/inst with a CE500 type.

You can be PIC flying all the freight (not people though) you can lift without an ATP under 135.

No really it's not a flame.

A buddy of mine works for a freight company and is getting a type without his atp. I allways thought you needed an ATP.

So you say you can fly freight but you can't fly 135 without an atp?

I know I don't believe him either

The PTS is the same for the ATP and a type rating, if said dude is getting a type and not getting an ATP ticket at the same time, said dude is dumb.

You don't need an ATP if you are not flying people under 135.
I think you lost the bet dude.

yeah he doesn't have his atp written yet. He's to friggin lazy. Yeah aric if your reading this you could have had the ATP done in one day down in TTN. Lazy lazy lazy.

ANNNNNyways. Why is there a difference between pax and freight?

PS I'm not convinced I owe a case of beer yet.

If the dude doesn't have the 1500 hours to get the ATP that could be the problem you only need 1200 to be PIC under 135, but you done lost the bet, call the fsdo.

So 135 captains in the 300 & 350 who do not have the ATP but have the type cannot carry pax.? Hmmm.. We are in trouble.:D :D LOL This has got to be flame, you do NOT need the ATP to carry pax 135 if you have the type.

no problem he's just lazy. He's got the time just no motivation.

Hey snoopy how did you get a 737 type with only 3500hrs?

okay i'm going to guess sarcasm-

It doesn't say you have a type in LRjet or DA-20

Most people didn't get a type in a 737 with 3500hrs an get furloughed. So you were a captain at a major that got furloughed?

Maybe if you went to usair where they type the FO's is the only thought.

Or you could have used your military benefits to get a 737 type. Maybe to go to SWA.

You see try thinking outside the box.

Not only do you not need an ATP to get a type, but if you get, say, a commercial type and then later get your ATP, the commercial type magically becomes an ATP type.

Better trundle on down to the package store . . . .

Yes.

The best example that comes to mind is John Travolta. He, of bogus Qantas Airlines uniform fame, has but a Private certificate but holds a B707 and at least five other type ratings.

In addition, we had an Italian student go through the FlightSafety program. After he finished, with about 250 hours, he went to Mike Pappas in Carlsbad, California, and earned his Citation type.

According to the FAA database, John Travolta has the following types:

P/CE-500 (VFR only) P/G-1159 P/HS-125 P/LR-JET

No 707?

To be PIC of a jet under Part 135 you do have to have an ATP. You also have to have a current First Class Medical. Not so under Part 91, where you could work with a Commercial and a Second Class . . . . . . .

a) No certificate holder may use a person, nor may any person serve, as pilot in command in passenger-carrying operations --

(1) Of a turbojet airplane, of an airplane having a passenger-seat configuration, excluding each crewmember seat, of 10 seats or more, or of a multiengine airplane in a commuter operation as defined in part 119 of this chapter, unless that person holds an airline transport pilot certificate with appropriate category and class ratings and, if required, an appropriate type rating for that airplane.

"in passenger-carrying operations"

Again: (and thank you for posting the regulation excerpt, Ty) only if you are carrying passengers in a jet under 14 CFR 135 do you need the ATP certificate. You can fly freight in a jet all day long (and night too!) with only the commercial certificate and the type. Silly, though, because as has already been said, the type ride is to ATP standards, and I'm doubting that most anyone who's made captain in a jet has less than 1500 hours. I got my type and ATP in the same ride; the check airman/DE who did it said we'd have to shoot one or two more approaches, but that's better than taking one of those accelerated ATP courses where you have to go learn to fly a Duchess or Seminole again.
