I really don't know. When I need to do something with Ubuntu I've been able to find a free linux package that does it. If you do want to run a windows program under Ubuntu there is a package called Wine that supposedly allows you to do that.

I have not tried it.
Things are do-able under Wine, but it's a real pain in the arse to set up. Generally not worth the hassle.

Mac with Parallels - USB issues

I too have switched over to Mac a few months ago. I still wanted the ability to use some PC applications so I got the virtual PC Paralles on it. I recently tried to use a Jeppesen USB card reader on the PC side to upload a GPS revision. It said the USB port was in use (by Mac OS). I figured out to enable/disable on the PC side but how do you disable the USB on the Mac side so I can use the Jepp updates? Of course I already downloaded the update to the computer before I realized the reader wasn't going to work, so now it is stuck in there. Any help?

Have you tried to leave the usb unplugged, run parallels, then plug the usb in? Transfering a file between mac and pc sides is as easy as drag and dropping a file from one to the other in window view mode, assuming you have parallel tools installed.

I'm sure CA1900 will respond with more suggestions, he's the one who convinced me to try the Macbook out.

Yeah, I've tried every which way. I did find in Parallels to set up the USB to autoconnect when you plug in, but the problem is that it says another application is using the USB. I've tried all the Help menus to try to find how to turn off the USB on the Mac side to no avail. The new GPS update is due now - need help! Also - anyone have experience with Avidyne? We have an EX 500 in a King Air and have subscribed to the Jepp Navdata for that. Apparently updates have to be done through a Zip drive plugged into the front of the units USB port. We just got the software update release 3.0 (internal software card)and it has been suggested that it will allow Navdata updates to be done through a USB thumb drive/memory stick instead of a Zip drive which will make it much more convienient. Any input?

I too have been keeping an eye on the Mac (Macbook with upgrades is around $12-1400), but was told to wait on Leopard O/S.

Now I heard that you can get the system and Apple will put Leopard on when it comes out? Anyone heard the same rumor?

Next question is...would you wait or pull the trigger now?

Try This...

My advice is to go to the Apple Website support page and then try the discussions board. I have found the people on that board to be infinitely familiar with all aspects of macs and software/hardware issues.

I seem to remember reading something about enabling usb ports in parallels. Just do a search in discussions and you should find what you're looking for.
