Calling all Mac Users

I need some of you "Computer Geeks" to help me learn how to use it.

Please give me all the tips, tricks, and gouge on the Mac's. It will be mucho appreciato.

Great! I think you'll be really happy with it. The first few days, you'll probably be kicking kittens trying to figure out where everything is, mainly because of so much "negative training" on how to use Windows. Think "where would I put it if I were programming it," and that's likely where you'll find it.

I need some of you "Computer Geeks" to help me learn how to use it.

What browser works best??

I'm happiest with Firefox. The included Safari browser is very good and very standards-compliant, handles inline PDFs well, and the new beta version 3.0 has some neat features too if you want to try that out.

But I find I work best with Firefox, for a variety of reasons. One of the biggest things it has going for it is that it supports add-ons, which can be installed very easily. One of the handiest is AdBlock Plus, which makes all the monstrous animated advertising on this site just disappear. There are many hundreds of add-ons available to customize it to the way you work.



Other software I'd recommend for starters:

VLC, for playing an amazing variety of video formats.

GraphicConverter opens and edits an incredible number of graphic formats.

Google Earth, which runs very fast on the MacBook

NeoOffice, a free office suite based on OpenOffice

SuperDuper, a terrific disk back-up (cloning) program for use with an external hard drive.

HandBrake, which (in one step) rips most DVDs and turns them into MPEG-4 video files to watch on the road. I use it constantly. If you have the time, the better H.264 format it can optionally use will make better-quality video in the same space.


That'll get you started. All the stuff it comes with will probably keep you busy anyway!


Things you won't need:

Antivirus software. There just isn't any out there for the Mac yet. Will that change? Probably someday, but until that day arrives, you can save yourself the hassle, the loss of computer performance, and the expense of an antivirus program and subscription.

Hope you enjoy it! It ain't perfect, but overall it's a heck of a lot better.

Welcome to the mac. I made the switch around a year ago, and wish I did it sooner.

There are so many tips/tricks that we'd eat up the bandwidth here discussing them. (Besides I'll let CA1900 fill you in, he's the resident expert).

As far as browsers go, I find myself using safari (Apple's default browser) mainly, but there are times that I use Mozilla and Netscape. The latter is primarily for company training as most of the on-line training will not work in the other two.

If you have specific issues, (and you will the differences between mac and PC are sometimes subtle and sometime rather harsh) send me a PM and I'll try to help.

Damn CA1900 must have a program that sends a message to the crackberry whenever mac comes up. He got all that filled in before I was able to.

Thanks for all the starter tips! Im firmly convinced that pilots could run the world! Collectively we know everything about everything, and Im being 100% serious here. We just cant quit the following long enough to take over....

Don't mind me... I was resistant to switching from DOS to Windows....

Software publishers sent me emails warning me that the DOS versions of programs would no longer be supported forcing me to switch to windows.
