I also found this interesting. I guess our hard stance on scope worked and the company went to plan B.

Continental continues to enhance its fuel efficient fleet. Today the company announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire winglets for 37 of its 737-500 and 11 of its long-range 737-300 aircraft, with installation beginning in 2007. The company has already completed the installation of winglets on its entire fleet of 737-700s and -800s and plans to finish the installation of winglets on its entire 757-200 fleet in the fourth quarter of 2006. When these installations are complete, Continental will operate 230 narrowbody aircraft outfitted with winglets. Winglets lower drag and improve aerodynamic efficiency, which can reduce fuel consumption by up to five percent.

Damn the winglets on a 500 are going to look funny :)

Continental Airlines (CAL - commentary - Cramer's Take) reported a profitable third quarter as passenger revenue increased in every segment of its operations.
The country's fourth-largest carrier said third-quarter income, excluding special items, was $146 million, or $1.36 a share. Revenue was $3.5 billion. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial had expected earnings of $1.22 a share on $3.5 billion in revenue.
Including a one-time $92 million gain on the sale of a portion of the company's investment in Copa Airlines, net income was $237 million or $2.17 a share. Continental earned $61 million a year ago.
"It's great to report another quarter of solid performance," said CFO Jeff Misner in a prepared statement. "Our cost control performance remains on target, and we'll keep our focus, even in this improved revenue environment."
The airline said mainline passenger revenue per available seat mile rose 6.8%, compared with the same period last year, to 10.21 cents. Domestic RASM grew 7.6%, trans-Atlantic advanced 1.4%, Latin America rose 10%, Pacific was up 12.2%, and regional grew 8.6%. International travel accounted for 47% of passenger revenue.
Mainline cost per available seat mile declined 0.8%, if fuel rates were constant and excluding employee profit-sharing accruals and special charges. Mainline fuel costs increased by $174 million compared from last year. CASM excluding fuel was 7.19 cents. Continental said mainline capacity grew 8.6%, while consolidated capacity grew 9.1%. Load factor was a record 82.2%. The company ended the quarter with roughy $2.5 billion in unrestricted cash and short-term investments

Not Bad. It's good to see an airline post two good quarters in a row. Hopefully the trend keeps going that direction. Congrats CAL!

Guess 48 of the "classics" won't be going anywhere anytime soon. It appears as though those 65 NG's we are getting starting in 2008 will be mostly growth, super sweet!!!!

I hope they give you guys some of that profit.

Continental workers stand to gain from profit-sharing plan

Continental Airlines announced in a federal filing Wednesday that it will turn a profit in the third quarter, which Wall Street expected. The airline didn't say how much the profit would be, but the company is scheduled to report its quarterly profit report one week from today, according to Reuters. There appears to be more good news for Continental workers. Bloomberg News reports that the airline "has amassed an employee profit-sharing pool of $100 million that will be paid in February." The final amount of the profit-sharing payout still depends on the carrier's fourth-quarter results, according to the Houston Chronicle/AP. "A payout next year would be the first for Continental's 43,000 workers under the plan, which was created in 2005 in exchange for $500 million in annual wage and benefit concessions by employees. If the pool's size doesn't change by year-end, each employee would be in line for about $2,325," Bloomberg writes.

Growing to Profitability

"The CAL MEC would like to welcome the 60 new hire pilots for October.
New pilots are being hired for both B-756 and B-737 classes. The next
Meet & Greet pizza party will be held at the CAL MEC office on Tuesday,
October 24 at 6:30 pm. All pilots are welcome to attend."

And enjoy your 30 bucks an hour your first year along with NO health care for 6 months. Sweet!

Well one could only hope that when you are a "45 year old 787 captain" that you would think it matters and that you would fight tooth and nail to improve the pay and QOL for new hire pilots among other things. It's dissapointing to read this from a former XJETer.......:(

What's up dude? Have you listened to today's earnings conference call? Management addresses this issue on that call. Some of the new NG's are replacement aircraft for the classics.

Why would you care about improving anything for new hires? You would have to negotiate something away for it and someday there may not be any new hires anymore. For years and years. Then you gave up things for nothing in return.

That's typical mentality with a lot of these captains I see. It's very similar to the scab mentality of me me me.

How about, you don't have to give up jack shiit. You THINK you have to give up something because that's what the company says.

If there is a god you will never make it off probation. I can only feel sorry for the hundreds of other pilots that you are going to make miserable.

Unfortunately, very few CA's realize how little a 1st yr reserve is taking home....$750 advance and $1250-1350 (med/investment deduct) mid month.

Great job CAL boys. Don't let management give themselves huge bonuses. That can be irritating.

KEEP IT UP!

This captain is very much aware of new hire pay and lack of benefits. I apologize to all new hires I fly with the pethitic pay and our poor contract.

However I try to concentrate on the future and the new hires are a major part of assisting all CAL pilots junior to senior to new hires negotiate a fair and equitable contract in 2008.

John Prater is a personal friend and my former boss in the union. I hope he stays the course with his message to return ALPA to hard nose trade unionism collective bargining. Now all CAL pilots new and old need to band together to take back our industry.

Unbelievable (especially from someone currently at XJET)............Ask anyone who is about to retire from this industry how many times in their career that they found themselves as a "new hire" pilot. I think they're pretty glad someone cared enough to fight for the pay/benifits and QOL for all new hire pilots. Thank the good Lord that Neal and company fought to and actually did improve these issues for the new hire pilots at XJET, I know they appreciate it. The fact that those improvements might have cost me a dollar or two and hour in pay was fine by me, apparenty not with you. This attitude that getting hired at a major all of a sudden solves everything and screw everyone behind me is scary.

Scab mentality? Look in the mirror

Which sounds a lot like your persistent whining. You think you are the only new guy to come onboard in this industry?

How did you slip through the cracks at CAL? I heard it was a pretty thourough hiring process over there.

Like any of that will matter when I am a 45 year old 787 Captain?

Sincerely,

B. Franklin

Edited for MJG:

This post was a comeback to Vingus' weak and ignorant post about benefits - and that only. I have never advocated junior pilots subsidizing senior pilots' careers and I 100% disagree with the current policy/contract of no health care for 6 months. I will do my part going forward to effect positive changes for all new hires at CAL.

Sincerely,

B. Franklin
