I believe there were some 737 sim issues in the past and created a shortage needed there so most people are going to the 737 from what I have heard. Although I do know that a recent class had a few 756 and 777 slots but not many of each (maybe 2-4 total for the class).

Plan 2-3 months on reserve MAX. if you are on the 737. My class was all 737 and nobody spent longer than 6 weeks on reserve.

I do know one guy who got hired very recently on the "trip" (777) and is already holding a line but I think that's b/c a LOT of senior guys bid reserve for the extra time off.

Thanks for the info. I got an interview on Tuesday so I am just trying to get an idea of what to expect if I get hired

Thanks again

Best of Luck to you

Good Luck,

Be positive, upbeat and excited to work here. It is a great place. They want to hire you and God knows we need more bodies.

Stupid question, why do you guys call it the "trip"?

Second stupid question....if flying the 75/76 2nd year...what does that average annual pay typically blend out to be? I didn't stay at a holiday inn express last night.

Thanks

Aw crapola!!! That was my plan. Does that mean I'm actually going to have to work?

No stupid questions brutha.....

The Year 2 Blended Hourly Rates for the 756 fleet are as follows starting 7/1/2007:

%Widebody (767) /Large Narrowbody (757-300/200)

40/60 = $67.25
50/50 = $68.22
60/40 = $69.19

WOW, that's kind of embarrasing. :bawling:

The blend really only deals with "soft" time (vacation, sick pay, sim events, etc. -- anything non-flying). Otherwise, you get paid for what you actually fly. So if you flew a full month of 767 trips, you'd get the full month paid at 767 (Widebody) rates. On the other hand, if flew nothing but 757's all month, you get Large Narrowbody pay X the number of hours you flew (greater of scheduled or actual block time). I believe the reserve guarantee is based on BLENDED rates as well.

The ratios on the blend look at the percentage of fleet breakdown. It adjusts up as soon as the fleet hits 1% past the next mark (e.g. When the 756 fleet is 51% Widebody it will go to the 60/40 blend). Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that but that is my understanding of it.

Figure you're gonna fly between guarantee and 85-90 hours once you hold a line. With some exceptions, junior guys will get more of the Widebody flying and more senior guys will get the Large Narrowbody stuff. The DH pay going to 100% this summer may change some of that dynamic a little bit.

Captain X,

Illuminating info. Thanks.

I have an app in right now, and just trying to figure out how long it will take to make up YR1 pay.

As an aside, how many days/month you guys flying these days? Ballpark, best guess, chainsaw cut???

At about a year and a half on the property, I hit the 50% mark on seniority. Since I live local to EWR, I bid day trips and was getting 18 days off. Life was good. Had I known how fast the movement was really going to be, I might not have bid the 777.

Less than an year on property. 737. Days off have varied between the minimum of 12 up to 16. Been flying between 85-90 hours. Only on reserve for 6 weeks.

I've seen a lot of threads saying that you'll only be on reserve for 6 weeks to a couple of months. This is not necessarily true. A lot of this depends on when you get hired. For example, May hires will be on reserve for 6 or 7 months due to the slow down in hiring over the summer. This will probably be true for anyone hired between February and May depending on your aircraft. October and beyond hires can probably expect to be on reserve for 2-3 months, maybe more. I was hired last May and sat reserve for 7 months, 3 in EWR, 4 in IAH. This was all on the 737. I still can not hold 757/767 in IAH, with 1 year on property. Yes, the seniority is moving us up fast, but let's not overinflate how quickly we're moving up. Your experience may vary.....

That post is spot on. Timing is everything.

I'm on the 756 EWR and plan on being on reserve for 8 or so months. It might be sooner than that, but who knows. There's alot of movement on both a/c. I know they're short on everything, so I expect hiring to continue for a long time. I've flown almost everyday on reserve. I know upgrade on the 737 is around 2 1/2 years now, so that's really nice. Best of luck to you, CAL is a good place to be. Everyone figures out a way to get through the 1st year. I'm already half way through and it's flown by. I'm single with no debt and a marginal savings account. I should have insurance next month so that'll be nice. You wouldn't expect this from a major airline, but it is what it is. Things will change for the better and you'll be in a great position with a good contract at a good airline. It's all what you make of it. Try not to get wrapped around finding the golden egg or the perfect airline. Make the best decision you can and run with it. Don't look back.......best of luck.

the latest numbers are that the hiring is going to slow like last summer, but not as bad, 16/ month until fall then back to mega speed. There were supposed to be a ton of interviews for the MD-80 sim is about to go away and they wanted to utilize it as much as possible. Everything else is pretty accurate. The next bid (Aug) should be good size....age 65 may change everything, but there are still going to be early retirements, medical problems and growth so there should still be hiring even if age 65 happens.

How long does it take to hold IAH? I assume the 737 is the easiest way to get to IAH

People were getting IAH right out of training... It might take a little bit longer now (a few months.. six months? I'm eyeballing it), but the 737 is the best way to get down there the quickest.

Of course, like they say.. "Past performance does not guarantee future results". YMMV.
