Here is an email I just received

Fellow pilots,

It is with tremendous trepidation that I inform you - the ultimate arbiters of your union - about the events set to transpire.

Via a voicemail message, I was informed that I have been emasculated as your MEC chairman effective immediately. The MEC asked for my resignation to allow their decision to ascend Captain J.R. Baker to the MEC chairman position. I did not want to even contemplate this request knowing that John McIlvenna was selected to fill the would-be vacant vice chairman position.

America West pilots - please take notice as to who will be in control of YOUR union - a former AWA management pilot J.R. Baker, the former President of AWAPA David Blomgren and its Secretary/Treasurer John McIlvenna.

The clear instruction from LC62 Chairman and Captain Rep David Blomgren was that I am not to communicate or interface with the pilot group, management, or the media. You should know, however that this instruction is a clear violation of the powers vested in the MEC chairman's position as stated in ALPA's Constitution & By-Laws.

Since this communication is in direct conflict with the instruction of the majority of the MEC but allowed under the Constitution & By-Laws, I am sure a special MEC meeting will be set up for my recall. I will preclude the need for yet another recall by tendering my resignation. I wanted you - the membership - to know who is going to lead you through the weeks and months to come.

My tenure is over. I firmly believe that I have always conducted myself beyond reproach. A smear campaign is sure to follow, but as always, I will remain available to tell my side of the story. You can be assured that I will tell you the truth. I have professed in the past that the one thing I will leave this office with is my pride and integrity. No one can take that away from a person if they have been as open and honest as I have.

Having been labeled as "ALPA's #1 Cheerleader" because I firmly believe in this Association, its strength, and its resources and professional staff, I will close with this one message. MEC officers come and go; representatives will be elected and recalled; but the backbone of this union - ALPA - is its volunteers. This decision by the MEC was made without the concurrence of the most stalwart of ALPA's volunteers - your committee chairmen. Your AWA MEC committee chairmen are opposed to change at such a critical juncture of our history.

The MEC will claim they are acting in what they believe is the best interest of the pilot group and the power you vested in them as your ALPA representatives. You will be the ultimate judge of that decision.

Fraternally,

Capt. CJ Szmal
AWA MEC Chairman

Watch for an ALPA decertification drive to take place within the next 6 months....
All the principal players now at the helm at C62 never were big ALPA fans to start with. I've said it before and I'll say it again, AWA is a joke!

Why is AWA a joke? Because some or most there don't feel well suported by ALPA?

Since I do not know what is going on over at AWA since I left, I really do not have the whole picture. What was CJ doing that made him get ousted?

Didn't JR get ousted out of management because he was always at odds with them over how the pilots were treated??

For those that do not know, JR Baker was the Chief Pilot for many years. JR is very "tell it like it is" and made many friends and enemies on both sides of the fence with this approach. I am not sure if this approach will work well or not in ALPA. I saw him go to bat for the pilots many times against management. Did he do everything right? Probably not. No one does.

But then again, the first MEC that AWA had negotiate their first contract sold them down the river. At least with JR, you have someone that has been on both sides of the fence, knows how management operates, and might actually be a good person to have on the MEC.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Kathy

Hey Joevollers,

I'd like to know what the hell prompted you to think it was appropriate to air this on a public forum in the first place? Use a little common sense next time would ya.

I agree. This is NOT the forum for this. You can go on our AWA ALPA web boards and read pages and pages on this.

Let's kep our dirty laundry out of the public domain.
