It's been quiet on the America West front. Are they still interviewing? Oh, and what are the flight benfits like there?

Interviewing is continuing as fast as they can handle for the forseeable future. Unfortunately they can only train 10-20 per month. They need another Airbus sim so there's talk about possible off-site use of one.

Flight benefits are great. Unlimited free pass travel for you and your spouse/parents/children. Pilots can use the flight attendant jumpseat as well (though priority goes to FAs). Pax get easy first-class upgrades so plan to be sitting in steerage or the cockpit.

TWA Dude -

I know they used to use an Airbus SIM in MIA. Are they still doing that?

Also, do the pilots still have to go through that door operations training through inflight to use the extra FA jumpseat?

The flight bennies are pretty good. You also get buddy passes which are given out 4 times a year. You get either 4 or 6 for just being an employee and I think 8 if you have perfect attendance. Your person has to pay for them, but the rates are not that bad. I think it is something like $40 to go PHX to LAX or like $182 to go PHX to JFK. Sometimes the fares are better to pay full price and be guaranteed a seat. I only got bumped 2 times in 15 years, but I just made sure I traveled only when other people didn't.

Today all we're using are our three sims in PHX (one of which breaks down a lot).

Yes.

Are they still way backed-up with apps? I had a friend hand-carry my resume in March, still haven't heard a word.

Apps are sent out in batches every couple of months, near as I can tell. Having your contact speak directly to Tammy or Tracy seems to speed things up. Good luck.

Yes we are still backed up on the resume's and getting out applications. There are only so many people in recruiting and even less hours in a day to get it all done. We are short staffed on pilots right now so hiring should continue.

Kathy, we are approved to use the sims in MIA, DEN and France but haven't been doing so lately. I think we may start in the near future though.

Three questions:

1. What are the odds that a newhire will get Airbus vs. 737/757?

2. Is AWA still experiencing attrition to Jet Blue and SWA or has that mellowed?

3. What about the rumor that AWA will pick up some 757-300s soon?

Lets see,

1. very high!!! The 73 fleet is going thru a reduction due to the removal of the 200's and the 75 fleet TODAY!! is thin but hopefully will get better should we aquire more of them.

2. I think that has mellowed but I really couldn't be sure.

3. We have heard the same thing on line but my philosophy is and has always been "it's all rumor until you see it on the property"!!!!!!!!!!

They need to step up the hiring and the use of the SIM's in other places. It was reported on the news here in PHX this morning that AWA has canceled many flights and about 70 pilots' vacations. Not sure what is going on, but they need to get someone who understands the meaning of the word "forecasting." They have always been behind the eight ball in this way. Further, there were always problems with MX in the summer. I hate to see them make the traveling public mad again when they were doing so good.

Kathy

Definitely interviewing...a friend of mine has an interview early next week.

They're hiring like crazy. I had two friends walk in my resume around December, got the app in April, called in May, interviewed early June, class July 26th. Currently I have a friend in training at AWA, and he is doing all his sim work in PHX. No outside sims are being used right now.

Tammy & Tracy were amazing, friendly, and completely swamped with work. I know they're doing the best they can. If hiring is to be sped up, they'll need more help.

When I asked what plane I would be going to, Tammy said I had the choice of Airbus or Airbus. She said for the forseeable future 100% of new-hires are going to the 'bus.

Does anyone know if they track how quickly you return the original application? Mine came in about two months ago, but between planning a wedding, honeymoon, and flying a 20-day line blocking 95 hours, I haven't had a chance to do the flight time grid and send it in (everything else is done).

Would hate for them to say "You didn't get it in within 30 days so you must not be interested"... Anyone have the skinny?

Good question Lear, I had the same question when I was busy requal training back to the left seat. I managed to get the app sent back a couple of weeks after recieving it, still waiting for the call....

HAL,

Great job! I hear a lot great things about both AWA and the Airbus (I like the side sticks). Plus, despite the serious heat 3-4 months out of the year, PHX is a great place - not expensive like Hawaii.

Does anyone know what's the best way to up-date the mailing address AFTER the resume has been walked in?
It has been about two months and I still have not received the app...
:D

Do you have an internal LOR?? If not it could take a while to get the app.

Been pretty quiet for America West posts over the last two weeks here on the Hangar. Here is an update on me:

Dallas AIRINC in January to meet Tracy Takara (stood in that awful line with the other 500 of you guys), worked the system hard and got an application in May, quick turn back to them, and got called last week (about 60 days from my app going in) to come interview in late August (the other date choices were 31 Aug/1 Sep). I know two pilots at AWA who are doing the best they can to help (I know other applicants who have alot stronger inside help than me). I told TB on the phone how excited I was and can't wait to put my best foot forward in PHX – any advice from anyone would be huge and PMs are great. Yes I’ll do Sim prep. So from start to interview it looks like 8-9 month process. Plan early. For us military guys your retirement/separation date creeps up and then your flying stops. Be out there swimming 12-15 months in advance. Good luck to all and I’ll let everyone know how it goes.

Hey Whiskey,

I have the app in. About 7 weeks ago. Unfortunetly, haven't heard anything from anyone on the inside to help it along. (Maybe they just haven't told me yet.) Is there anything I can do to help it along myself? Should I send regular updates or will that just annoy them? Thanks.

Ifly34,

I would always update once a month and the thought of annoying someone never entered my mind because it's the squeeky wheel that always gets the oil!!! Unfortunatly 7 weeks is almost like yesterday around here. I would just hang in there and play the waiting game and try not to think about it that much and they should get back to you pretty soon.

WD,

Read the updating criteria found directly in your post further up in the thread:

*** UPDATING: Resume updates should only be submitted for:

*Change of address
*Change of telephone number or contact number
*Significant increase in hours
*Achievement of type rating or change in current employer

***Please identify your submission as an "UPDATE" for proper processing***

I would follow this if I were any of the pilots with resumes or applications in there. If not, it could be viewed as "cannot follow directions."

Yeah Kathy, I know what the company web site says but I have never followed that because companies are notorius for not wanting to be slammed by paper work. I have always thought that if they wanted to stop the paper barrage then just interview me!!! It's worked at three of the four 121 companies I have worked for...

WD,

I know what you are saying - years ago at AWA that WAS the way to get their attention. In fact, people were given "points" for constantly sending info to Pilot Hiring and were moved further up in the stack.

My only thought is there is a reason why they have put that in the job posting. As you have stated the women in pilot hiring are slammed without very much help.

Imagine for a minute that you are them. You see the same person updating with 10 more hours every week. Once again, you have to file that information or upload it into the computer system. After a while, you are going to resent that person because they are making your job harder. You would rather be calling or sending a letter to people to interview, but you can't because some people are "not following directions" and you are doing nothing but filing paperwork.

What the true question becomes here is the definition of significant increase in hours. Is it 100 hours? Is it 500 hours? Is it 1000 hours?

If you can get ahold of one of the women in pilot hiring and ask them that question, I think it would be helpful. Ask them also what their view is of people constantly updating.

All I can tell you is if I had that information in a job posting and someone kept sending me information that was not what I had asked for, it would tend to make me upset. It is the same thing when an ad says, "no phone calls." If someone calls, you are going to eliminate them because they can't read! :D

Kathy,

This thing has always been a gamble and I have always felt that I have nothing to lose but time and stamps! I even had one comment from an interviewer who stated that they were willing to do what ever it took to stop the updates. My response INTERVIEW ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear ya! There are some airline still out there that follow the "update often" theory. It is just knowing who they are.

Interestingly, I had a friend who was interviewing sales people. I asked her if she had heard from a candidate I sent her. Her first question? Did they follow up? She said that she wanted someone in a sales role to be aggressive, but tempered with respect. If they did not follow up with her, they were not in the running. She made a very valid point!

Most hiring departments are not seen favorably by upper management because they are expense driven, not profit generating. So, it is difficult to justify getting additional help. I believe that is the reason many of these airlines are putting "screen outs" in their requirements, like Air Tran's 500 hours in a 121 or Jet Blue's 20,000 pound requirement.

I could only venture to guess what the reasons are for what they are putting in advertisements. I always caution people to go the "safe" route.

Kathy
