I understand it was an America West Captain, 55 years old. I've heard a few variations of details but since I have no idea what's rumor and what isn't, I'll just leave it at that.

R.i.p.

old dudes die more frequently than the younger population, you will see much more of this as the 60 year olds approach 65. and everyone one knows what a freaking joke the FAA medical is.

I think there is a lot more to this story, much like the AWA FO who drown while snorkeling on a Hawaii overnight.

I think the FAA medical should be a joke. Unless you have something which will affect your physical ability to fly or cause you to keel over dead in the next six months, you should pass.

My thoughts are with his family.

Guess what, pilots are human beings too! We die just like everyone else. However, I would put money on the fact that pilots as a whole are much healthier than our general population counterparts. Just go to any of the Las Vegas buffets, Golden Corals or Superwalmarts. Heck, even Major League Baseball parks have all-you-can-eat sections now. I mean, how many hot dogs can one eat??? My prayers go out to the man's family...

There is a study showing that once a guy makes it to his late 50's, he's probably gonna be healthy for the next 10 years -- the thinking is that most problems erupt in men's 40's and early 50's. Once a man gets past his mid-50's he's probably going to be ok for a decade or more. It's like the deadwood drops off earlier and the screening problems occur earlier than mid -50's. I know of LOTS of guys who have had heart problems in their 40's. Of course there will always be exceptions and those who hate the change in age 60 will enjoy trumping it up, but the fact is, people get illnesses at all ages and the group between age 60 and 65 will not have be much different than the group between 55 and 60.

The FAA physical was never meant to be a super duper physical. They didn't want to burden pilots with an expensive physical every year or 6 months -- the cost-benefit ratio just wasn't there. Most pilots don't get problems discovered on FAA physicals, rather they are self-disclosed.

Thank you for your insight and expert opinion Doctor.
