The perfect 15/1 mixture results in the hightest exaust gas temp or "Peak EGT"

Richer or leaner results in cooler temps.

At low power settings (say 65% or less) you can lean past the RPM drop and your fuel consumption will improve. The full fruit of recent engine management knowledge is most applicable to an injected, trubocharged engine with a digital engine monitor like those sold by JPI or Electronics International. A monitor may be overkill in a carbureted 172, although they are good at finding a variety of engine problems long before they become expensive or dangerous.
