Sounds like Delta's move is part of the consolidation of airport operations, and should a large carrier in Chicago fail, it will put them in a position to pick up some of the pieces.

Branson's speculation is shared with alot of analysts and representatives of some of the surviving large investment houses. If fuel continues to go up, interest rates rise, and inflation increases, it might not take 18 months.

Branson: Unlikely all big U.S. airlines will survive

Tue Jun 2, 2009 7:33am EDT

TOKYO (Reuters) - British entrepreneur Richard Branson, founder and president of Virgin Atlantic Airways VA.UL, said on Tuesday he believes it is unlikely that all big U.S. airlines will survive the next 12 to 18 months.
"I don't think that the American government will yet again put more billions into the airline industry. They've learned their lessons from the car industry," Branson told Reuters in an interview in Tokyo.
"I just happen to believe it is unlikely that all the big American carriers will survive the next 12 to 18 months," he said, adding that at least two airline companies are vulnerable.
Branson did not specify which airlines he was referring to.
Virgin Atlantic said on May 26 that its yearly profits nearly doubled, but warned that the weak economic environment would make it "almost impossible" for airlines to make a profit in the current year.
Meanwhile, Branson also said Virgin Atlantic is interested in launching flights between Australia and Tokyo's Haneda Airport, which is currently undergoing a major expansion, in the next 12 to 18 months.

I didn't know VA was a legacy, wow. And since I'm hungover (I was implying Vamerican would fail) this is to help out the recent surge of people with no common sense

Also as of June 1st, CAL no longer a Skyteam member and now a Star Alliance member (like United).

Just saying...

I thought that switch was later this fall

What is the time line for the plans?
We expect the transition period to lastthrough the fourth quarter of 2009, and many regulatory and other approvals are required before we can implement our plans. Continental and United and the other Star Alliance members are in the process of securing all necessary regulatory and other approvals that are required before we can implement our plans. Continental has obligations to the SkyTeam alliance and to Delta/Northwest for several months after the closing of the proposed Delta/Northwest merger.. Continental intends to end its participation in the SkyTeam Alliance after the last scheduled flight on Oct. 24, 2009. We continue to work through the details, but anticipate that our participation in Star Alliance will begin promptly after we leave SkyTeam.

C'mon guys, everyone has it all wrong. A United-US Airways merger is in the works. It's going to be one big happy family

Too bad on the Delta move, that corner was pretty sweet for a ORD operation with easy in/out and nice terminal inside. F is pretty much the ghetto.

Strange gate stuff afoot @ ORD. CAL occupying UAL gates. Whats that all about?

W

uh... have you not paid any attention?

Its the JV ( joint venture ) between UA and CAL that are sharing gates/lounges... etc...

Im sure a merger is in the works a few years down the road... but your ' spying " of aircraft at gates isnt much.

Just saying...

U got it!

Thanks for paying attention to reality!

I am sure a merger is in the works in the distant future... but the alliance JV is the reason for the gates thing.

doooh!

Nothing is more aptly named than the F gates at ORD.
