ATA never called me last year after I sent in my application. I guess I was not qualified enough to fly their heavy jets!!!

But, if their pilots apply to us they better have a lot of RJ time or forget it!!!

Good luck!!

BTW-The top line is true, but after that I am kidding. Of course their pilots are welcome at ASA.

It just shows to go you what a cr@pshoot this industry is. I received my AWA and ATA apps at the same time last March. I did the AWA one since there were no essay questions and sat on the ATA one. Dumb luck. If/when ATA furloughs there's gonna be an awful lot of guys getting their second/third/fourth furloughs. No doubt it can happen to me too. Or anyone.

Me too! I was really peeved when they didn't call, but now I am so glad. The sad thing is I have a lot of friends over there. :(

But if they had called, you would have gone there right? Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Pat yourselves on the back all you want for not getting hired at airline ABC, or explain why airline XYZ didn't think you're good enough. The fact is, if you fly airplanes for a living right, you should be very worried. NO Airline is insulated from all the problems plaguing this industry. If you think you have nothing to worry about, you are living in a fantasy world. It could just be a matter of time before your airline /job is in jepordy. We all live in glass houses, put down the rocks.

AMEN!

That is 100% correct....that's why I crack up when I hear people go "OMG, if I got on with ABC, I'll be set for life...they will NEVER go under"

That ATA app sat on my desk for 6 months after I was furloughed from UAL. Those essay questions held it up. Who says lazy isn't a good thing! I thought I could burn my logbook in 99 after landing a job with UAL, not so... Nothing is for sure. Even B6 says their going to loose money in 4th qt. If things don't change, SouthWest is next.

Good luck ATA guys!!!

Wow, sounds like you've buried these guys and they're not even dead yet.
C'mon, this may very well turn out to be the beginning of the much talked about airline consolidation...that was my first thought.

stillflyn,

Like you the essay q's set me back for a while. I guess I didn't fill them out right and so I didn't get the call.

Nothing is for sure in this industry and to this point I still enter/log every flight, more so for 30/7 calculations, but just in case.

Even though we at SWA are purchasing aircraft and hiring, we are making huge moves to reduce our costs just like everyone else in this industry.

RJ

RJones,

I know, everyone's taxing around single eng. What needs to change is the price of a ticket. These fuel prices are killing every airline. How far into the future is SWA fuel hedged?

Crashpad is right, this is the beginning of some industry consolidation. I don't think ATA is the last airline that will file for bankruptcy either. I don't think there will ever be a panacea for this industry. The walmart-zation of the industry, and the US economy continues.

If you are in college, or attending flight school right now and planning on this messed up field as a career, think twice. I can think of 20 better careers that pay better, have better job security, and don't tie you to the success of one individual company. You'd have more fun owning your airplane, having all the holidays and weekends off. This isn't your father's airline industry.

Crap. Thank god I didn't take your advice. Sounds like your taking up a well deserved seniority number.

Ever had a real job, butt-munch?

Well, I have. A lot of them . . . . got out of school in 1990, right in time to find myself in the first Great Aviation Depression, after Branniff, Eastern, and Pan Am folded, along with their associated feeders, dumping ten thousand pilots on the market.

Many of us who were unwilling to buy a job (PFT) had to work outside of aviation, for a number of years.

If you think you would be happier outside of aviation, "don't let the cockpit door hit you on your ass on your way out" . . . and make room for someone else, because you must be a real joy to fly with.

I've been sending my resume for 6 years and never got anything from ATA. I guess somebody in recruitment knows me personally or something, but I think it happened for a reason.

Good luck ATA crews! Your always welcome to Eagle.

Funny, you should mention it! I own my plane and am having a blast in this industry...but then again I love to fly, so what do I know?
Again, why is everyone giving the ATA pilots their last rites? Like the spectators in a roman colliseum.
