PS. I agree there's not much in Indiana (excpet Purdue of course) and UND is suited only to Eskimos (and a few people from MN).

Lets be careful with those digs about UND and the weather there and in MN. The cold weather builds character.....I know, as I am now developing some more of that character from slipping on ice in my driveway Tuesday and breaking my right arm. Lots of character going for me now with a cast past my elbow (lol)

Hey dude, just to fill you in, whenever Michigan football plays Purdue ,Iliinois, etc., Ann Arbor is a winner. You pu$$ies never win. Hahaha. The Vitalis Sun Bowl. Sounds like the Bowl of Champions to me.

surplus1's post was right on, except for spelling PURDUE wrong. But that's okay, we'll give him one every now and again :D

Everybody is proud of their school, and thats perfectly fine. Its one thing to be proud, its another thing to be arrogant. A 300 hour pilot is a 300 hour pilot, a 500 hour pilot is a 500 hour pilot, and a 1000 hour pilot is a 1000 hour pilot. MAPD (and British Airways, for that matter) puts people into airliners at 300TT. I know turbine corp pilots with far less than 1000TT. The numbers in your logbook do not a competent pilot make. I really wish people would quit using that as the end-all guide of experience. I could have 2500 dual given in 152s, does that make me a better pilot than somebody with 500TT with lots of XC and actual IFR time? Is a pilot with 100 hours Seneca time a better pilot than somebody who has 50 hours of Seminole time and 100 hours in a transport category simulator? Its all about perspective...

I've met grads from all the major flight schools (Purdue, UND, ERAU, FIT, WMU, Illinois, SIU, blah blah blah) who were awesome people and good pilots. I've also met people from all those same schools who are chodes and I would hate to be paired with for a month. There is always going to be the 1%ers, and when you have 10,000 pilot students vs. 250 your 1% is going to be a much larger quantity. It doesnt take a math major to figure that out.

We can all debate the merits of our schools versus our 'competition'. It's the same sort of debate as Chevy vs. Ford. Some people who went the FBO route will always be jealous of the "wunderkids" of these programs who get hired before they do, and some of these "wunderkids" will think they are God's gift to aviation because they got a job with 500 hours. That will never change. I am very proud of my school, and I've been given opportunities I could not have gotten elsewhere here, but you won't EVER hear me say I'm better than anybody from any other school. The one thing that can't much be taught in academia is humility...

As long as we all know Ann Arbor is a whore, Illinois will win the Big 10 in basketball, Kentucky will whup UNC this weekend, and UND is too fargin cold, we are all on the same page. ;)
My thoughts exactly. And Hemingway why have you changed your handle? Are you trying to hide? Just remember, if the regional thing doesn't work out you can still use that lear experience and do some real flying. lol. CYA

As much as I don't understand the venomous anti-Riddle crowd (why, exactly, are you this angry that the school exists?? Did a Riddle grad kill your dog or something?), I am even more mystified by the anti-Indiana crowd. This is the sixth state I've lived in and I am happier in Indiana than I was in any other... And I didn't even go to Purdue. :)

I'm from Kentucky, and I like Indiana. Its kind of like Kentucky, without the backwards mountain people, or hills, or lakes, or streams, or woods or any topography worth mentioning other than far southern IN. Not to mention the corn, soybean and cattle future reports they play on the radio during the day. Or for that matter, the corn and soybean fields that dominate the landscape. At least in Indiana they got country roads right (N/S and E/W, straight!).

Seriously, Indiana has some of the nicest people I have met, but there ain't jack to do here other than drink and watch movies. But what can I complain about, I'm an hour from Indianapolis and two from Chicago, less than that by air; it gives me an excuse to escape!

I know three riddle pilots, one is a tool, one is ok, and the other actually knows his stuff.

About the same mix as non-riddle pilots.
Whew! Being a tool myself, you had me worried for a second there! :D

HEY! I did both tonight, for crying out loud! What you got against a good home theater and a bottle of Jack?

You didn't mention the OTHER thing that we do in Indiana... Let's just say there's a reason there are so many young mommies in this state. ;)

(not that I'm engaging in any such things, sitting home watching "Training Day" and waiting for the phone to ring....)

Anyone who accepts 20 bucks an hour to fly a 50 pax jet is not so bright. I hope those people grow up to fight for better for the future pilot groups and not just settle for what they get from these regionals. I can't figure out why some people accept jobs with regionals that don't PAY THEM during training. How do you live two months without food???

And anyone who accepts a governmenet who owns eveything isn't so bright either. Talk about lowering the bar...They set the bar to whatever they desire..Oh that's right, it's collapsed now.

Hey, don't knock those mountain people. Remember, $hit runs down hill ... to the flat lands of Indiana.

"Escape" to Chicago? Geezee, now I'm really confused. I thought the population of Indiana was made up of people escaping FROM Chicago (and of course the "S" than ran downhill from KY). Must be the school I went to......confused always confused.

I'm even getting flack from Jarhead now. I agree with him, in that the "cold builds character", but nine months of winter and 3 months of cold (and mosquitos)? That's takes more "character" than I'll ever have.

Now sun, and sand, and hurricanes .... that's the ticket. Where else can you get trailer parts in every back and front yard plus season tickets to mouseland?

Nope, not a Pacers fan... But occasionally I get cups of soda thrown at me by the pax and I run into the cabin, kicking and punching anyone in my way.

;)

The refs at the last couple Purdue basketball games (men's and women's) should thank their lucky stars they don't serve beer at our games. They'd have gotten a faceful!

Must be something about Indiana teams that brings out bad refereeing.

So a degree in something completely unrelated to aviation is going to help me?? Where as at Riddle and other aviation schools at least we learn things like aerodynamics... aviation law.... Dont think you'll get that from any FBO. So maybe Riddle kids pay to much and maybe some of them have attitudes (what do you expect when EVERYWHERE you go in the darn school you hear about how great the school is) but its what you are walking away with. A better knowledge of the aircraft you are flying and aviation in general. Its sad that so many riddle kids come out with a chip on thier shoulder. Lets face it though.... If you were hiring a pilot, and you had two guys walk in with the same hours. One got his ratings at an FBO and a degree in Psychology from a state school or one who went to an aviation school and got his ratings there. Are you going to hire the giu who still thinks Bernoulli's Principle is what makes the plane fly because thats what the FAA says they have to teach you in ground school or the guy who actually knows a thing or two about aerodynamics? A general knowledge of aerodynamics is always a good idea when your FLYING AN AIRPLANE.... Besides does your local FBO have unusual attitude training?? I bet they dont, but Riddle does. That could save your assets one day.
Wow, I don't know where to start.

I think it's pretty naive and arrogant on your part to assume that those of us that didn't attend Riddle don't understand aerodynamic theory. Maybe, just maybe, some of us might have technical degrees from "state schools" with admission requirements that would blow away ERU (what's the average SAT score anyway, a whopping 1100?). I'd be willing to bet that my physics and engineering classes were a little more intense and competitive in the University of California system.

And in regard to your unusual attitude training comment: My little, local FBO had one of the largest aerobatic fleets on the West Coast (2 Pitts, 6 Decathalons, 2 Citabrias, 1 Cap-10, and 1 Extra 300) Back when I was a CFI there, we all had to go through a full aerobatic course - including a back seat check out in the Decathalons, so that we could teach spin recoveries and unusual attitude training. Many of us also competed in aerobatics at the regional level.

With all that said, I don't think my background makes me any better than the next guy. I've flown with pilots with what you might consider "inferior" training that could make an airplane dance. I've also flown with pilots much smarter than myself, that were the biggest idiots in the sky. The best pilots are those that exhibit a quite confidence, but are always willing to listen and learn new things.

Wow

All I need to say is I can understand why us RiddleRats are called that. Just because you go to Riddle doesnt mean squat. I went there, instruct there now, and have seen great pilots and some pilots I would trust driving a truck on a dirt road in the Arizona desert come through the program. Your right we have an unusual attitude recovery program, which may save your assets one day but just cause you can do a spin and slow roll in a decathlon doesnt mean no one else in the world cant either. One of my good friends fly's out of CHD and is one of the best aerobatic pilots i know show probably 3/4 of the riddle kids out there how to really fly.

I am proud where i went to school and feel I did learn a lot, but thats because I took what was given to me and applied that. Just remember to anyone thinking Riddle, UND, Purdue (See some of us can spell), etc, that the selected University gets you an interview, you yourself are the one to get the job. Just because you can spit out a lift equation doesnt mean you are the type of person to deal w/ on a 4 day trip, its the personality and the person themselves that gets them the job, not the college or the degree.

I dont mean to come off harsh I just can understand some of the stereotypes out there about RIddle, but I hope many people know there are a lot of humble RIddle grads out there, and that the small percentage that are cocky, ignorant, cant start and engine of pilots are a minority.

Ok done venting

Riddle Rat,

Excellent post! I'd much rather spend a 4-day trip with someone like yourself, than someone who wants to explain the kinematic viscosity of a C-172 (and how that makes them a better pilot).

Happy Holidays

I am attending riddle for college right now (Extended campus). I can seriously say that the school sux and I ain't learning sh1t!
That'll happen when you play Lock On 23 hours a day and spend 1 hour editing the paper you downloaded off the net to make it sound stupid enough to have come out of you! the public schooling system in a certain southeastern state should be sued for corrupting children into trying to think with their heads up their @sses.

Don't bash all Riddle guys, just the ones from Prescott. The Daytona crowd is a'ight for the most part.

Almost every single Prescott guy I've ever flown with thinks they are god's gift, to the extent that they stopped learning at some point.

They already know it all! They went to Prescott! Thats with 1000 hours in the right seat of an RJ by the way. UGH!!!

Of course I know some cool Prescott folks will read this and get their feeling hurt, so I just have to say that there are some exceptions. . . NOT!!
