He has zero hours, so go easy on him.
I dont know why, but he is having a tough time understanding VFR vs IFR and I just cant seem to convince him how VFR still uses instruments.

VFR--a system of flying in the national airspace in which the pilot uses outside visual reference as the main way to aviate and navigate. This doesn't mean they can't use instruments to assist in their visual aviation, but they are limited to conditions that would require more advanced instrument skills (such as flying in clouds). Also it is less dependent on air traffic control than an IFR flight.

IFR--a method of flying in the national airspace system in which the pilot is using instruments as a primary source of navigation and aviation. Generally they work with air traffic control more than a VFR flight would.

This is the most general way of explaining it I can think of.

You have to look at the instruments when flying VFR.
The instruments will tell you what your heading is, what your altitude is, whether you are climbing or descending.
Without instruments you won't know what direction you are headed or what altitude you are at.

A good pilot doesn't need instruments to fly VFR -- do it all seat-of-pants-style (pun intended? you decide!).

... I remember my 3rd solo flight: bee got caught in the pitot tube while on the go for a T&G.... in a traumahawk! Pitch + power is where its at... It was then that I really appreciated my CFI making me do a couple T&Gs (merely as an exercise) several days beforehand with the basic 6 flight instruments covered up).

I may not know my exact altitude, but I can tell if I'm getting closer to the ground or further away from it without looking at any instruments. X-Cs might be tough without so much as a compass, but I can tell generally what direction I'm heading. The Mighty Muddy is to my West, most crop section lines run north-south, east-west.

I have a son with Asperger's syndrome, so I might be able to help. They don't need flowery explanations, they just need facts. (Consider trying to explain this to one of those "Third Rock from the Sun" aliens, where EVERYTHING is taken literally.)

Here are my three sentences:

VFR stands for Visual Flight Rules - - the rules we can follow when the weather is good and we can see a long ways.

IFR stands for Instrument Flight Rules - - the rules we MUST follow when the weather is bad.

Regardless of whether the weather is good or bad, or which RULES we use, we can always use the airplane's instruments to make sure the airplane is doing what we want it to do, and going where we want it to go.


It may be that he has not separated VFR from VMC, and IFR from IMC. His question may have meant - - to HIM - - "May I practice IFR procedures here?" Perhaps you could have answered "Sure, wanna borrow my hood?"

Besides, I always thought it was READY FIRE AIM ! ! !

I think the real question is; was his buddy flying "under the hood" with a nonpilot in the right seat. That could be a problem.
