I think the real question is; was his buddy flying "under the hood" with a nonpilot in the right seat. That could be a problem.

yes "nonpilot" in right seat

"does flying remote control model planes count?"

Your profile says "many" hours, and time in a 152, 172, a colt and a tri pacer. I'll bet you can explain this to him, ADHD issues aside, since you have a PPL.

In a situation that uses instrument procedures, whether by necessity or for practice, the instruments are your ONLY source of flight information. In all other situations, you can use BOTH instrument and visual (looking outside) information.

You need to expalin to your friend's buddy that not having a qualified safety pilot is bad mojo.

he said: "I was up with a buddy and he asked if I minded if he fly instruments. I was amazed, wasnt he already using them???"

Perhaps the problem was with the phraseology. Maybe his buddy should have asked if he could fly with "ONLY instruments." But considering your boyfriend is not a pilot that would be illegal.

I would just say this... there are two types of flying. One is when you can see outside, the other is when you can't (in clouds). In the former, you fly by looking out the windshield and checking the instruments. In the latter, you fly with instruments ONLY.

A good pilot doesn't need instruments to fly VFR -- do it all seat-of-pants-style (pun intended? you decide!).

... I remember my 3rd solo flight: bee got caught in the pitot tube while on the go for a T&G.... in a traumahawk! Pitch + power is where its at... It was then that I really appreciated my CFI making me do a couple T&Gs (merely as an exercise) several days beforehand with the basic 6 flight instruments covered up).

Man, this is great! Out of all the people on this board it only came up from a 300 hr pilot. Awesome dude. You know whats going on!! It's called Control Performance, works wonders doesn't it? While a CFI, I made all my students do this.

I used to have an instructor who would scream "God took six days to create it, why dont you f*&@#n use it?" (Referencing the horizon) if you were staring at the instruments.

No matter what you do with your flying, always remember what you said here!!! It works for Visual Flight or Instrument flight, in any airplane you'll fly. Easier in some than others, and some even have a flight director that makes it that much easier!!

Becket, your haiku sucks!

becket:

"Visual Pilots, Suck.
Get out of my f-ing way
Boeings rule the sky."

It utilizes a 6-7-5 syllable rule.

Not a haiku!

5-7-5, remember?

Sorry to burst your Boeing bubble!

being a woman I needed it translated. I dont speak fluent male. Except when Im on my knees, but then he isnt listening!

ok enough silly stuff. I think he just likes to argue with me!

have a great one everybody!

Confusious say "woman flying upside down, have crack up.":D

HotDigidyDog...

If there were more women like you out there, life would be so much better!!

I agree. Let me see.....a gal who is also a pilot....who is caring....and has a sense of humor. Boyfriend should listen more....he might be missing some of the good stuff. It sounds like you treat him very well and should be a keeper. The question is "Is he?"

Fly safely and have fun along the way!

...I thought VFR was all about being on top.
