The first CVR trscrpt we were all exposed to with "praise allah" etc all through it was the EgyptAir suicide/homicide (for those who agree with the NTSB and disagree with the Egyptian govmnt).
Because of this a lot of us are a little alarmed by the references to a higher deity by persons in the cockpit.

like im saying

people automatically jump to conclusions about this

like sbakim said...loosly translated to prais the lord....

also the term "insha' 'allah" used alot means god willing

as in if someone asks if you will be picnicing on memorial day you would reply with above phrase

With the autopilot engaged and while climbing through 2000 feet
Who does that? The only time I've seen someone do that they were incredibly behind the airplane.
It's standard to engage the autopilot at 1000' AGL on the sled I'm drivin' at my company.

With almost each item on the checklist they put their fait in god. They said numerous times, we rely on god, or god willing. Yet they still crashed. Which only means that their god wasn't willing and has a great sense of humor!!

From my read, regardless of the crews verbal praises (was this transcript translated?) the non-flying pilot engaged the AP and the AP either disconnected or one of the flight crew inadvertantly did something that caused the AP to disconnect. Unfortunately it appears that neither flight crew member heard the AP disconnect and the CA continued to request AP commands as if the AP was still engaged yet both crew members were confused when the aircraft apparently did not respond to the selected AP mode/commands:

02:44:00 FO Autopilot in command sir
02:44:01 CA: Exclamation remark
02:44:02 : Sound of A/P disengage warning
02:44:05 CA: Heading select
02:44:05 MSR227: Straight in approach runway zero four lrft, one zero one, next call full establish Egypt air two two seven
02:44:07 FO: Heading select
02:44:18 CA: See what the aircraft did!

Hand flying??? I do not get paid enough to work!!!! Besides, when you f-up, you can blame the A/P.

No offense taken at the above replies. The autothrottles are something that I'm not equipped with and so I naturally forgot about them. I don't go overboard on the hand flying, I just need the practice more than some of you to get a feel for the jet.

As I understand it there are a lot of problems in Middle Eastern Countries with pilots and crew believing that "allah" will put oil in the airplanes if "it be his will" etc. and so they tear up a lot of C-130's through this and other ridiculous beliefs. Evidently there is someone from Lockheed stationed at a lot of locations just to try and teach them that they need to put their own oil in etc.... I for one don't want to be a passenger on anything that is being operated by anyone who refers to "allah" every other breath. No thank you.

Amen brother!

CA: Set thrust, by the will of God

FO: God willing, thrust is set

FO: Praise God, 80 knots

FO: We rely on God, Vee one, rotate in God's name

CA: Positive rate, praise be to God. Gear up, God willing

FO: Gear is up, praise be to you Lord Jesus Christ

Why is it cockpits in the developed world are not run in this way? Western airlines have their share of religious pilots- Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Muslims- yet an exchange like this has never taken place outside the Middle East.

Therein lies the difference between Devout and Fanatical, I suppose....

That made my day. Too funny!

By the way, is there a link anywhere to whatever investigation was performed for this incident? Was the aircraft AOK but the pilots through the A/P was engaged until it was simply too late? After reading all the CVR transcript I am really curious.

There are those on this message board and at my company (and yours too) who would talk precisely like that if they thought they could get away with it.

As a Christian there is no way i would ever speak like that in the cockpit...there is no need for it. I place my faith in what i believe, but i do not need to reaffirm it with every sentence i speak.

As far as hand flying goes...what so wrong with hand flying? I hand fly until in cruise, and then use autopilot until around 18k on the descent. There is absolutely no need for autopilot during those times(unless auto throttles have anything to do with your ride...i suppose, since i do not have them). There are two pilots in that cockpit for a/c avoidance in indian country...and yes you can handfly and watch for traffic at the same time...you sure did it while in your initial training when you first got your private didn't you?! Shooting approaches by hand was also brought up...why use the autopilot for appraoches, besides for those of you who need to do it to keep current at it of course. I hand fly all my approaches, except for currency with the autopilot, and will always do so. You are going to rely on that man made piece of machinery to do all your work for you, and one day it will bite you in the a$$ when you must do it on your own and don't have the help of the a/p. Anyway, i'll get off the box now...my opinion on handflying is of course the same as 50% of the people on this board, and completely opposite of the other 50%, so i really do not think i will change any minds about it, but hey, i had to throw my opinion in there.
