I've heard that on paper, the Twin Beech has the worst single engine performance of any Twin out there. Any other thoughts or opinions?

The Baron 56TC is one of the best-23000' single engine service ceiling.
As far as the worst, what about the old Apache? Hydraulic systems all on one side? Never flown one, but I'm sure somebody that has will have something to post here.

Yeah, those early model Aztecs had the same deal with the hydraulics on the left side. It would be a handful trying to pump the gear up w/ the left engine out at gross weight shortly after T/O

I dunno...when I trained in one in So TX last year, temp was in the mid-80's F, we were about 150lbs under gross, and engine failures as soon as the gear switch was selected "up" didn't require immediate landing. It woulda' been a WIDE pattern back to land, however ;)

Fly safe!

I thought the Seminole was one of the worst single-engine performers out there. Sure seems like it on a hot day.

I flyw Aztecs 14 years, as a personal aircraft, and feel they have good single engine performance. The gear on the Aztec is not that much drag, but they will not climb with flaps down. The 250 HP engines and big wing give much better single engine performance than the twin Comanche. The C-421 I flew at gross on a hot day could only do 600 FPM on both engines! The B-200 does good on one engine and the Cheyenne II has a section in the AFM for single engine take off.

Engine out

Hands down the Champion Lancer 402-engine out 150 neg. rate of climb. I instructed in one back in the 60's.

Google Champion Lance and take a look at this pig.

How about the Cessna Bobcat/T50/UC78/Bamboo Bomber? As I recall the props were fixed pitch and therefore could not be feathered.

Did that have the 300hp engines in some models?

I was going to suggest the 150HP Apache until I heard of mobie's Champion Lancer. At least the Apache would hold altitude if you were below 5,000 feet.

To my knowledge they all had 275hp Jacobs.

I fly a Twin Beech 5 nights a week hauling cargo. I would say that the single engine performance is a bit lacking but not exactly worthy of the reputation it seems to have gotten. I will say it is not forgiving and does not have the performance margins to allow for sloppy technique or improper handling. Like any other twin if it is handled right it will perform as predicted. When it is not it will bite you square in the butt.
