Crash-proof,

the franklins have a unique staccato exhaust sound as they are taxiing. I always thaought it sounded like they weren't running very well, but that's just how a Franklin sounds.

I did a little research after I asked about hte go480's in the Queen air. Apparently they were made with the igso480's, (like you said) the igso 540s and the io-720's

Yeah I forgot the IO-720s, they sound cool too, but not likes bats out of hell like the 480's.

It's funny cause for some reason I always thought the 720's sounded like radial engines and not horizontal....i like em.

Ahhh all these planes, becomming so rare!!!

That's interesting as I also used to BBQ by Dulles, And I just love that sound. Also used to work at Heathrow, I would stand at the end of 27L just to FEEL the take off, happy times

I'm generally a fan of round motors, but the most memorable sounds I've heard all came from a V12.

The CAF used to have a Bell King Cobra (P63) that had a wonderful sound on a low level run

And the best memory is of walking on Venice Beach about 4 years ago (corporate layover) watching all the babes, when a P51 and a Spitfire came over low and fast One second, I'm watching the scenery and then the sound of two Merlins explodes into my consciousness; the following second I'm asking where those airplanes are headed and twenty minutes later I'm at Santa Monica. Man what a sound.

Ok, now some sounds I'd really LIKE to hear, and hopefully one day will...

* Sound of R-4360 (I think), the 28-cyl. "corncob" monster. I have no idea what they sound like.

* The Piaggio P-166 - Since i like GO-480's, I can't imagine what they sound like with the prop turned backwards. I remember seeing a Royal Gull takeoff but the airport was so noisy I could barely hear it.

The sound of an RB211 equiped Tristar climbing out (dittos to the person who already mentioned the RB211's)

and, the noise that is made when a JT8D-217 lights off.

Best-sounding aircraft

I grew up very near an AF base and not far from our large municipal airport, so I got to hear plenty of great-sounding aircraft.

I'd say nearly any multi-engine radial. I heard plenty of C-47s. Also heard RC-121s and C-54s (I think - could have been C-118s). Also heard and saw others, such as C-119s. Then, when I was a college student, I traveled through ORD quite a bit. I remember sitting in a 727 waiting for takeoff when a C-124 Globemaster took off. I could hear the roar of its four radials inside the 727!

Last summer a beautiful natural aluminum B-17 spent a few days here. I saw it while running an errand for work downtown and then as it flew over my house. No mistaking its radials!

Then, when I was living in OKC, someone brought in a P-51. There was something particularly exciting about that Merlin!

I agree with the above about the sound a 1900 makes when you throw it into beta. That's cool, too.

All the planes listed make a great sound! I happen to think the neatest sound is when a -10 powered Mu-2b is starting up and the Single Redline Limiter is kicked in (SRL) -- woosh - woosh - woosh eeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Coolest plane

breaking the no jet rule, I saw this fighter at the dayton air show a few years ago. It was doing demonstration. I cant remember what kind it was but I am pretty sure it was a fighter. It was a smaller plane and had a turbine, but no afterburner. When it would he gave it power, it had the coolest hum/whistle.......Anybody know what plane this could be????

I think that Rare Bare running WFO (Wide F!#$!ng Open) would have to be my first choice.

Then the Wistle Pig (F-27) would be next, there is just something about that piercing frontal noise of the RR Dart that just says "I am way bad".

as much as i love to hear a radial (any radial)...

...after crewing the F16's for a few years in the Air Guard, theres still something about being not more than a few hundred yards off the departure end and feeling (note; i did not say hearing) them do a full A/B with a little low transition mixed in. and i wont even talk about what 6 of em doing them all in sequence will do to your brain for the rest of the night

North American T-28 is pretty sweet...

The wright 1820's make a great sound, not only cause they're the biggest 9-cylinder motors, but on top of that they're geared. The T-28 sounds great, but you gotta listen to an Albatros taking off! You can feel the thumping in your bones. Super DC-3 sounds great too...
And you ever heard the old sikorsky s-58 choppers at full throttle? That is amazing!!!

All geared engines sound good (I agree the golden eagle is cool soundin). I think it's because the prop and engine make 2 different sounds and making it seem like 2 different planes flyin in formation.

F-4 Phantom II

The highlight of my life was flying "Ol' Double Ugly." When I was at the Guard Base and not flying a particular "go" I'd often go outside to feel the burners, thank you Wingnutt, light up and listen to that glorious noise as they quickly became a dot on the horizon. Somewhat nerdish, but we can all appreciate that.

No-Jet rule

One time a Blackbird flew over Denver. They say it put out a sonic boom that day. I don't remember that; I do remember that loud noise from the engines!

I always liked the quiet, low rumble of C-5s and C-17s, notwithstanding that C-17s are cool airplanes anyway!

about the only military aircraft i dont appreciate hearing is them dang tweety birds, those things whistle too dang loud!

A couple of years back when i was in college, broke and with little to do, i would take my friends out at nite to the approach end at hollywood intl airport. We were running like bats outta hell to the approach end from the parking lot, which was about 250 yards away, to meet an oncoming plane. We were all sorta inebriated that they were still running and didn't notice the plane zoomed right over their heads. 2 screamed and fell to the ground. It was an L-1011, Delta. Ah, unforgetable.

They stopped using them here about a year ago. Best thing we got now is the fedex DC-10.

Delta had the smaller engine on there 1011's The RB211-524B-02 puts out BIG THRUST ( about 50,000 lbs )and kicks ass.Now thats a good sound.

how about the ones from Canada? It's that airline with the blue star on the tail. I forgot the name. They sometimes have tristars operating outta here, but for the most part, they use big airbuses.

Speaking of which, the fedex A300 have a nice sound on the ground, nice whistle sound - are those R&R's?
Takeoff is like any other plane though.

And I would still like to know from you MU-2 drivers, why does the MU-2 put out that strange howling noise when on the ground? The turbo commandrer also did that but to a lesser degree.
