Best school to get the 737 type?

I’m looking at getting my type this spring. I’ve looked at the web sites for a few different schools, and am trying to make a decision. Any recommendations?

While I can't compare it to other schools (obviously), I was totally satisfied with the training I got at Higher Power last year. Excellent instruction, both in ground school and the simulator. I recommend them highly.

Agreed with CA1900. HPA may cost a little more than others but you also get to meet with SWA recruiters on the Friday of ground school (if SWA is your career goal).

Had a good experience at K&S Aviation (Phoenix), owned by SWA pilots, be sure to request Mike Sturgis for the sim.

FTI Denver

Went to FTI in Denver (see banner on this site)... excellent training, instructors, etc... very laid back and flexible atmosphere... great price for 737-300 EFIS (glass, auto-throttle, FMS, nice A/P)... highly recommended..

I need to agree with but crust for a change. the only dif. with Airtran is you are actually competent in the 737 and not a 8500 type. I have flown with guys who had a 8500 type from guys who did not quite make or fit the SW type and they are just as good as guys that never had to pay for there type. Do it the right way and earn it.

Huh??? Your post makes no sense.

Here is a second plug for FTI in Denver. I did the -200 for $5995. Very happy with them. The G/S instructor is one of the senior 737 instructors at United. Small classes as well, they like to stay at four or less per class which gives you great one on one instruction. With the -200 they get basically the sim slots they want, so no 2am sessions. Usually mid-day.

Everything is very convenient as well. Hotel and office which holds the classrooms are right across the street from the UAL sim center. Big shopping plaza also across the street with everything you need as well. No need for a car.

Most importantly, their prices are by far the best.

Airtan offers the school for free!!!

Unless you only have thousands of hours of PIC jet, but no PIC 121 in a Beech 1900 or the like.....then Airtran won't have anything to do with you.

Crew Pilot Training (CPT ) in houston at IAH. you'll be in the CAL 737-300 EIFS sim..

class sizes 2-4 people average.. Excellent personal instruction, and... they WILL take care of you!
PS - know 4 graduates, and they've all been hired... Call up Ray Brendle.. he'll hook you up!

I think I'd rather pay my money and try and get on with an airline that has a track record instead of one who will give it to me and may not be around in 10 years.

If you made this post because you took "Uppercrud"'s suggestion at face value, you should probably look up "flamebait" in the dictionary . . . . after that, you may want to check out "gullible", too.

Anyone considering going to another airline for three years only to get a $6K type rating would be too stupid to work here anyway.

FTI Denver

Got my type at FTI in DEN. I can't say enough about the staff there. I give them my highest recommendation.

P.S. The biggest plug - I got the job!!

Higher Power Aviation

I frequently add my thoughts on this issue so pardon if I sound reptitive to those who have heard this before. The schools mentioned are all certified and all have had graduates get hired by SWA, AirTran & other major carriers. If dollars are your number one concern, then the choice becomes easy....look at the bottom line & make the call.

If you are considering other factors, then I'll offer my perspective. I received my type from one of the schools mentioned. Great folks, good instruction, but the day I fiinished was the last day I heard from them....nothing wrong with that, it was a business transaction only. They were under no obligation to provide me with any other services. I didn't pursue anything with them....I didn't sense they desired that & the concept of "networking" was foreign to me. Nor were they in a position to help me very much in terms of reaching my goal of getting with Southwest.

Having gotten to know Joe & Mark at HPA over the last 4.5 years I will say the following:

1. They are interested in you before, during and after you attend the course. they & their entire staff.
2. They provide continued support through newsletters, repeat visits to HPA, counseling from their staff on choices/options, job fairs, they put on around the country in conjunction with other carriers (I'm not saying other type schools don't do this, I'm just not aware of it if they are)
3. The culture I experienced at my type school was professional & direct. Capable instructors but at the end of the day, that was all I received. The culture at HPA is truly unique, somewhat "southwest like" in my opinion. Describing it much more difficult to someone who hasn't attended there; for those who have attended there, everyone is nodding their head right now saying "yea, it is unique".
4. Use of the latest technology and learning tools to make the process efficient and insuring successful (yes one still has to do homestudy but I think it would be much easier than under the system I went through).
5. As an instructor myself some years back at HPA, I know how challenging a job it is to be a platform instructor. The individuals highlighted already on here at the other schools I'm sure re aof that same quality as found at HPA...I will simply say you won't be disappointed at HPA....no question about it, they're among the finest in the business anywhere.
6. Lastly....flying to me is as much about relationships as it is about the thrill of flying. While some maybe turned off with a class size of 10-15 (I had 3 in my class & having seen both, I would've preferred now to have been a larger class), HPA has small & large classes but the "relationships" you develop with your classmates regardless of class size & the ones developed with the HPA staff will last for as long as you desire them too. They are a class act. But the relationship you develop with Mark,Joe & the staff is even more important & significant in my opinion.
7. As said earlier, SWA hires from all type schools but having the opportunity that comes quite frequently with having folks from SWA visit HPA periodically (they do at K&S quite often, don't know about the others) always helps you to understand what SWA is all about. If they are your final destination, having as much exposure to them as possible can't be a bad thing in my opinion.
8. Lunch at the "ball park" on Thursday, "floats" on Wed, pizza on Monday & return invite anytime you're in town to visit....not bad.

Again if price is the major concern, disregard all of the above. However, if you want more than just a type, in my mind I'd recommend talking to Sandy at HPA & find out for yourself. Good luck regardless of which school is your choice....again the others are great schools & will get you the type, they are run by honest & fair folks from what I know of them....these are just the thoughts of an FO with SWA....

What He (Chase) Said ! ! !

At HPA, you get the type, but just as important, you get relationships that can open other doors in addition to SWA. Its all good there. Not many places I can say that about . . .
Cheers

Go to the one that buys it for you! The best one is the free one.

Cpt

I went to CPT in Houston. It was a good program and it was the shortest at the time, 12 days I think. The price was competitive and it was within driving distance for me. The main reason I went there though was it just happened to fit my schedule better. HP at that time was on the fence about a class on the dates I needed, so I went with CPT.

They also helped with a ticket on CAL if you needed to fly in and the hotel they have a "deal" with was pretty nice as well as close by. Sim times were reasonable (very early am) and there were only 3 of us in the class. Instruction was good, and the training facility was very nice.

They also let you come back and sit through the ground school portion at a later date if you need to (no charge), just as HP does. Overall I was pretty happy with the course.
