I would agree with your assessment. The only thing for certain is uncertainty in this industry.
How many pilots are retiring with the passage of age 65? How many pilots get bypassed for upgrade?

Mandatory retirement numbers a minimal. Guys do leave for various reasons, but as the global economy goes into meltdown the ability to get jobs elsewhere evaporates. Attrition is down to max 40 guys a year, probably less.
The cadets are on a roughly 10 year upgrade cycle so they get bypassed until they have 6000 hours total time. The company would like to have 50 to 60 cadets per year joining. There are roughly 150 on the line today, mostly Airbus.
There are others who either don't get selected to upgrade or fail upgrade and remain in the right seat. The number is pretty small though.
