You said the price worked out about the same, but you didn't say anything about operating cost. If you plan on getting a hundred hours or so before selling the plane, it probably doesn't make that much difference, but over the long haul a plane that costs $10 to $20 and hour more to keep up could really hurt. Planequest's operating cost section might be a good starting point.
 
I've never thought of the Seminole as a bad plane. It's like any other T-tail - just carry a little power to the flare and you can grease it every time. I don't feel that there are any significant compromises compared to the Duchess. Both perform about the same. I do prefer the Beech quality, and I like the fact that I sit higher up than in the Seminole. Makes me feel like I'm flying a bigger plane than I am! :D
