My company lost my run and offered me a base 1500 miles away. So I decided not to move the family for the second time in as many years and now I'm pumping gas again watching all you nerds fly away. It's a good FBO that pays better than some flying gigs and half of the guys are pilot linemen.

I realize how much I miss flying every day along with all of the challenges and awesome sites. I can't wait for my (soon to come) ground school date and get back up into the air full time.

In the mean time don't be too rude to the poor line-roach; I'm doing my best to give good customer service. I'm used to boxes that don't complain.:D

That blows, man. My condolences...and good luck!

I, for better or for worse, have never worked as a ramper, lineman, etc. I have, however, worked as a front desk clerk at a large airport hotel, so I'm used to being treated poorly by customers. You know, everything bad that happens in a hotel the the front desk guy's fault! (Know who my rudest customers were, almost without exception? Delta flight attendants.)

As a lineman, tell us your best rude pilot story. I'm curious.

I feel your pain. I have been pumping gas for almost eight years. Even when I had a flying job I was pumping gas. At least its an excellent way to network.

As far as the rude pilots, I am going to guess 75-80% of all pilots that fly into my little corner of H*ll are pricks to the linemen. Its not hard to say please and thank you, and don't demand your services. A pilot is no better than anybody else when it comes down to it.

The most recent encounter was with the great Andreenie. He was an a$$ from the start. He pulls up in front of our hangar expecting to get in, two planes- a senca II and a stearman. So I gas him, allow him in the hangar, and even give him a crew car for the night. About an hour after he leaves I get a call, its him and he is irate. It seems that because he is an airshow pilot he is exempt from paying for overnight in a hangar. I tell him sorry, I didn't know that I wasn't allowed to make a little bit of money for the airport. After all, its not like the rates are posted in the office. Anyway, I tell him I will make a call and see what I could do. He procedes to drive back to airport so he can argue some more. I wanted to reach out and choke that little sawed off a$$. we don't make our money off Avgas sales, it's mostly jet fuel and hanger rent(not overnight). I could have eailly given him the hanger for nothing, if I wanted to.

Moral of the story, be pleasant to the line guys. You never know when you may get a good deal. Because if your not, they could be giving you the shaft. We have more decision making ability than you may think, especially if you dealing with the boss. Don't demand special treatment, because you will get the wrong kind.

I am an aspiring career pilot and a line manager. I have lived in both worlds and understand both sides. I will admit that my earlier estimate is reversed, the majority of the pilots I meet from day to day are very pleasant and I have no problems working with most. I will do everything I can to help you and then some.

One thing that does make me laugh is the fractional and corporate jet guys. They think that a small airport FBO is going to be just like Millionair or Signature. Come on guys, think a little. We try our best, but sometimes we just can't be ten places at once.

work

I feel your pain Nolife!

I'm working at Office Max greeting customers and helping them find office supplies. My boss is a little pimpled faced 19 year old kid that thinks he's the shizznit. I plan on doing this until I either get a better job, or get a class date.

It's really tough out there, not just in the aviation industry. I've got a BBA and can't even get a decent paying business type job.

I know one thing is for sure though, things can ONLY get better from her on out!

Good luck

Longhorn

Help me out here - I live in a hole and I haven't been to an airshow in years.

Who's the "Great Andreenie"?

thanks!

Typhoon,

I've been seeing your posts and I'm always cracked up by that cute baby in your avatar. Is he yours? He's a good looking chap.

I sure hope so!
He's a good looking chap.
Thanks a million. He's got one heck of a command voice, too, for a three month old.

Now we'd better not talk about this too much longer, since it has nothing to do with aviation...wouldn't want to hurt anybody's feelings! :D

I had never heard of the great Andreenie until that fateful day. He doesn't go by the the great part, just eddie andreenie. But he sure thought he was the "shizznit" airshow guy.

Sorry about the long post, it was a real long weekend and I needed to blow off some steam.

Been there, done that, three times over. Don't worry though. Times will get better for the aviation industry and you will be back up there with us "nerds" before you know it. You're doing the right thing too. You never know who will come flying through looking for a pilot.

Best of luck to you!

I'm Back

I got a job flying C208's. Thanks to pumping gas and networking. I met the chief pilot while pumping gas and learning to fly. It pays to work at the airport.

Good luck in your search.
