Don't know if this is the right forum to ask this but....

For a guy/gal commuting to JFK, what is the best (and cheapest) way to get between LGA and JFK? Does the company still run some kind of van service? Also, how much time is needed to get between the two. For example, if your last flight out of LGA is at 8:00, what is the latest you could end a pairing at JFK and still have a good chance of getting out?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know how the B6 guys do it, but having spent mucho time in NY:

$20, take a cab. Public transportation between LGA and JFK is pretty much non-existant, two buses and a train maybe? With the new train to Kennedy, maybe it's better now, but in NYC, the cabbies have kept public transportation far, far away from Manhattan to the Airports.

If the cab line is really long, you can always go to the drop-off area at either airport and find a town car that just dropped off. Ask the driver if he'll take $15 (or $20, whatever) to take you where you want to go.

They're not allowed to, but twenty bucks is twenty bucks and it's New York. If on the off chance you get hassled by the cops, you would be expected to explain that yes, you called and scheduled him for a pickup, so he doesn't get a ticket, but other than that, you get a town car and don't have to wait in line.

Q-Runner Cost: $10($7 to Kew Gardens) (718)846-4900 Its a Maroon van. Call and tell them where you are. They stop at Kew Gardens (half way). Can take 45min-1hr.

Kew Cab Cost: $18 NOT the yellow ones - call (718)846-6666 Plan on 20-30 min ride.

Yellow Cab Cost: $30-$40 fastest way, but most expensive.

Airport Bus See link in post above. Cost: $13 Runs every hour or so. Plan on 45min to a 1 hour ride.

City buss link to Subway - Don't go there... 4hrs
Walk - you wouldn't get off the airport before made into road kill.

I give myself one hour for travel time between airports. So if you flight was at 8pm and you want to be there 30 min early then leave JFK by 630 to 7.
Oh yah - don't forget your seatbelt especially for QRunner!

You can purchase a book of 20 bus tickets from the Chief pilots office. I believe they are deducted by payroll. The bus tickets work out at $6 a pop and the bus service is pretty regular.

That operation works darn well, and I have used it many times when getting to an airport and needing a quick ride. I typically always go to the drop off point.

One more thing about this bus service: 1st departure from JFK to LGA is 7am, pretty much hourly service between the two until 7pm, which is last departure to/from LGA. Depending on traffic, it's anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes between the two. MUCH more comfortable and arguably safer than the god-awful Q Runner, IMO.

Cheers,

Acefaser is spot on about this subject. One hour is a good estimate, 25-40 minutes via Yellow Cab.

Q-Runner is cheap, but you get what you pay for. Drivers who don't know the first thing about driving, seatbelts that are frayed, dirty vans and shotty service. I got on one of those vans once and had another rider tell me he'd been riding around LGA for 45 minutes! Then he had to make the one hour ride to JFK. Another day I was in the van and had a driver from Russia. He was driving at 40-45mph through Kew Gardens (way too fast on those narrow streets) and tried to pass a moving van that was double parked (he couldn't see around it to know if anyone was coming in the opposite direction). We met head on (apply directly to the forehead), he slammed on the brakes and caused a flight attendant in the front bench seat to hit her head on the van's console. Bottom line...in my opinion, stay away from the Q-Runner.

Good luck,

GP
