So about a month or two ago, Asquared passed through Fairbanks, Alaska, USA and (naturally) we met over a couple of cold frothy beverages.

Now I've known Asquared since the old ProPilot days, about 1998 or so. He was down in Puerto Rico flying some aerial recon over Cuba or some such madness and I was just cutting my teeth in the engineer's seat of the DC6.

We exchanged a few emails and when he got back to Anchorage we met...um...over a couple...uh...cold...frothy...beverages.

At any rate, time marches on, and beverages wait to be drunk and since then I've met a few others from the virtual aviation community.

I've met '500 and 2'.
I've known 'dogg' for awhile.
Anybody remember 'Akutan Bandit'?
I run into 'Otter FO' every now and then.
'Singlecoil' is an acquaintance of mine.

There must be more. I'll edit them in as I remember them.

Every single one a true gentleman--except Akutan Bandit who is a frickin' god among mortals if you ask me.

He doesn't even fly anymore, let alone frequent this board, so I ain't givin' nothing away when I tell you this man deadsticked a Navajo down on a beach on the peninsula in 50 knots of wind.

Yeah? So? you say?

Let me tell you, this wasn't some velvety black sand beach three miles long. No sir. This beach was rocky, short and had logs washed up.

Get this: He told me after the second engine quit the first thing he did (after feathering the engine) was put his seat belt on.

Next he proceeded to head for a tiny beach where he touched down but didn't want to hit a log laying crosswise. So he puts the left main gear in the *water* to avoid the log and then swerves back out of the water.

There's absolutely, positively NO DAMAGE to the airplane!

He's got pictures of the Navajo, the water and the log to prove it. Incredible!

But where was I?

Oh yeah, small world.

Who have you met from flightinfo and more importantly: Who told you the best story?

'Cause flying ain't about the money--it's barely about the chicks--it's mostly about the stories.

Small world is right! I didn't realize so many from this board frequent the FAI area. Hopefully I'll run into a few of you during my stay here.

Mar, at the risk of hijacking your thread, let me tell you how small a world aviation is.

When I upgraded to Captain on the Brasilia and it came time for my FAA observation, the fed turned out to be an older guy who had a lot of nice things to say about the way I ran my cockpit. [Blushing.]

Anyway, before he left, he asked me, "you're not by any chance related to Mike _______, are you? An ex-Eastern guy?"

"Sure," I replied, "he's my father."

The fed pointed a finger at me and said, "I did your dad's DC-9 type-ride at Eastern when I was a check airman there, back in the early Eighties!"

Small world...it sure as hell is!

I've met a good handful of the folks on this board and even flown with a couple since I began frequenting the board several years ago. Who told me the best story? I'll have to think about that and get back to you. Really, though, all are interesting people with their own unique stories. I've already got some stories about a few of them.;)
Here's all I can think of I've met since I've started frequenting the board, several of whom I've enoyed cold, frosty HAND-CRAFTED beverages:
Freight Dog
Sleepyhead
Dash8driver
Nalo Boy
English
pilot monkey(we miss that dude)
pilotyip
TIS (bought an interview prep book from him over the phone)

There's an even longer list of folks I've known over the years who are on this board too, but I already knew them, so that really doesn't count. Their stories about me should be considered lies.

:D

There's a list of folks on this board who I really would like to meet. The list is too long. Could you imagine a flightinfo meeting in Vegas?

Good story, Ty.

No hijacking here. Good story.

HAL--I'm still waiting for that PM to go grab a cold frothy...um...coffee...???

Or if ya'd rather poke around the DC6, that's cool too. I'll show you around.

Flightinfo face-to-face Vegas style. Leave the cameras at home please...

Fly safe.

Could you imagine a flightinfo meeting in Vegas?

We can all meet at Carl Icahn's Top of the World restaurant in the Stratosphere Casino Hotel that he also owns.:D (no sarcasm intended)-

Rum Jungle/Studio 54 after dinner..

3 5 0

The only person I've met live and in color is Vik. I was his safety pilot a couple times when he was practicing commercial maneuvers. Nice guy, nice flights :)

I've corresponded with many more people, too many to list, via instant messenger and e-mail. The best stories I've heard aren't fit for posting, though!

LOL!

I had a very similar thing happen to me. I had been furloughed from Bar Harbor, and needed a job desperately. I interviewed with the chief pilot for a large 402 operator in FLL. Before the interview even began, he asked me if I was related to any Pan Am employees, and I told him that my dad was a Capt at Pan Am. He stood up, and told me that my dad was one of the best natural pilots that he'd ever had the pleasure of giving a checkride to, and that if I had half his talent, then I was hired. No interview, I was hired just like that!

My old man was one of the very few civilians hired by Pan Am in the mid 60's, and had a commercial and instrument rating, with a total time of 230 hours. He did the check ride in the airplane, and the guy who interviewed me was the check airman. My dad got his Multi engine rating in a 707! This CA was not expecting much from my dad, due to his inexperience and was a known PIA check airman. Dad kicked butt on the oral and flying, and was a Pan Am airman.

I called my dad after getting hired and told him who interviewed me. After a LOOONG pause, he said "Ed *******? That a$$hole is still alive?"! FWIW, I could do no wrong at that company, and the guy always treated me very well.

Aviation is a VERY small world...... I am always running into guys that I know, or know my dad.

Sorry for the hijack!

I've flown with Widgeon and English. Quite possibly a few others, too, but Flightinfo never came up when I flew with them.

LAXSaabdude.

I've met chuychanga, Vector4Fun, Falcon Capt, JetPilot500, and turning2. I'm sure I've bumped into more than a few others and just didn't realize it.

I'm still trying to get FlyChicaga to get his lazy a** down here so we can party on 6th street. If anyone reads about a couple of drunken idiots getting arrested in Austin, it'll most likely be us!

Let's see...

I've met:

JetPilot500 (actually known him for a long time, we work together now)
Bobbysamd (He gave me a phase check back at Riddle many moons ago, met for dinner about a year and a half ago)
BigD (JetPilot500 and I enjoyed some BBQ at the Salt Lick together with BigD)
FlyChicaga (Gave him a bunch of my old Flight Safety stuff)
Cat3C (We used to Flight Instruct together, now we work down the same hangar row from each other)
Gulfstream200 (Shared a few cold ones together at Falcon recurrent last fall)
A1FlyBoy (He used to be a student at the Flight School I worked at years ago)

I'm sure there are a few others, but I can't think of them right now... plus I'm sure I have met many more but we didn't know who each other was (relative to this board)

small world theme in my mind.

jeez,

and a small world it is. during a dry spell after quitting a job, calling around and got desperate was calling Alaska. Not the airlines but the whole state. everyone else was too. found a guy, was talkin about what ive been doing previously and turned out he worked there too in the past.....6000 miles or something away in vermont. Askes "Is Dave _______still running the show there?" needless to say i answered yes and BS'd a bit about things there. He offered me an instructing job somewhere out near King Salmon. I cut fish out that way summer of 93 and knew the area a little bit but I knew I couldn't make any money out there. but it was something. I didnt go in the end.

what i did learn about aviation in alaska is that Linden Cargo is aparently a very good job and noone leaves. perhaps its cause of the flights to airports that don't officially exist in other countries. Can anyone verify this? you can also get a job as a DC-6 firebomber out there....they called once.....never called back.

(now as far as meeting other infoites)
CHQ initial ground was like a suprise meeting of 5 or 6 of us info guys. met a few others at work over the last few months. I think a meeting of everyone in Vegas would involve a huge ammount of alcohol, BBQ, gambling and a few fights over regionals and religion......or regionalreligions heh.

met so far:
freighthumper-buddy,pal,workmate
ace crackshot-during systems
stick man-class
busdriver-class
chops-class
starchecker-class
bravodude-at a fridays in ORD.
and probably a few others i didnt know were on here.

I've flown with -
Eagle-ista
LaxSaabDude
AAsredheadedbro

and met here -
Freight Dog
Hugh Jorgan
dash8driver
sleepyhead
airbaker
I.P. Freley

and already knew -
JP11
Resume Writer

and probably others who haven't come out yet...

crewdawg and i are good friends and go to school together...

Chatted with one or two of you on the phone, but never met anybody in person. I've worked with AviateYou and MxRider Maybe we could do some sort of informal FLIGHTINFO party somewhere/sometime. Any volunteers to get the ball rolling?

Speaking of aviation being a small world, here's my story. Years ago I was a new Learjet FO returning from my first trip to europe. We landed in Bangor to clear customs around 10 at night. While the Captain is dealing with customs/immigration, I run up to the airport bar to grab us some sandwiches. There were a couple of airline and Air Force folks hanging out in there. (A C-17 was doing a turn) I got to talking to this Army Captain. I mentioned that I use to be stationed at Loring AFB torwards the end of the cold war. He replied how his wife's dad was once the wing commander up there. Turns out his wife was a young lady I used to share lifeguarding duties with at the base pool. (Holly Hammack) Small world indeed.

i always have plenty of beer:Dyou're all welcome...

Off topic but...

I've met a lot of former frieght dog buds at airport hotels. It makes off duty time more fun than sitting in a smelly hotel room alone watching the local news.

I haven't met any flightinfo.com alum yet... I don't know the secret hand shake. :D
