Yes, pax do not respect pilots because we don't wear hats and some of us don't shine our shoes. That's the reason.
Not wearing the hat is also why oil is $110.00 a barrel. Not wearing the hat is why the air cart was inop last week. Not wearing the hat was the reason there was a groundstop in ATL on Friday.
Where in my post did I mention hats? And what does any of it have to do with the price of oil or broken equipment?
I'm not talking just about hats, we don't have to wear them now if we're not wearing a coat. I'm talking about the lack of professionalism in general. That's the part of a person that comes out during bad weather, poor treatment of the pax by agents, ATC and maintenance delays, etc., and the pax still walk away saying "at least the crew wasn't a bunch of slugs." Professionalism is more than a hat. It's behavior, it's language, it's being able to formulate a sentence, it's being willing to be a help and it's an appearance that instills confidence. And admit it or not, the appearance is a reflection of the person.
Consider any great leader and they started as a great follower. That's where character is built. And great character is doing what's expected, even if you're not being watched.
