Maybe if the airline would do away with 6 day trips, some people wouldn't need a backpack, 2 suitcases, sleeping bag, tent and a bag of groceries.

There's no shortage of "older guys" who've never had and sort of social or conflict skills. The young guys at least have a chance to develop those skills with a little guidance, don't know if you can say the same about the older guys.
...learn to type before you work on the finer points of leadership...and proofread, before you throw arrows...young buck....then we'll talk Maslow, single engine no-flaps, amorous FA's and FIR's...and how ya get real rich, inspite of anything the company takes away...

The few pilots I know that go so far as to carry a backpack are those just doing a day trip and don't want to haul their roller bag around for the day.

That being said: I personally think the backpacks/Ipods in the cockpit & terminal/spiked gel hair/cell phones on the walk-around are unprofessional.

I don't know how they expect to be taken seriously.

Hi!

I just saw one of those ipod, backpack carrying pilots at the terminal.

SHE was about 55 and a senior major airline pilot!

alright, next time I fly with a captain who busts out his iPod, I am going to accuse him of being unprofessional and report him to pro standards. Next time I see a captain wear a backpack, I'm going to report him to pro standards.

Christ, you are all pain in the asses. Find something else to bitch about. And yes, you will find me wearing my iPod in uniform. When I deadhead, am sitting in the terminal on a long sit, or in the crewroom, I am usually listening to my iPod. It doesn't mean I have ADD or any crap like that. It simply is something I enjoy.

No one ever compalins about the 50 somethings who wear a shirt older than thier F/O. Maybe take a shower 1 time a week and, smell like hell. Forget the gel they dont eaven own a comb.

Then they sit around and talk about being proffesional.

Look for me, I will be the first one to sport the new fashion on a extra large Fanny Pack.

I stopped worrying about idiots like you long ago. Also, I wear slip on shoes -- anyone got a problem? If it's not in the contract, and it's not in the GOM, and it's not in the FARs and Oprah or MsNBC hasn't done a special on it...

*goes to buy a backpack*

Sorry, you're too late on that one. There is at least one pilot who already wears a fanny pack on a daily basis.

You obviously missed one of the bravest news pieces ever produced for the 11 pm time slot: "MsNBC Investigates: D1ck-Chafed Regional Pilots"

The "raw" edition is truly ground-breaking.

Of all the myriad of unprofessional things that I have to see and endure in this industry (reneging on signed contracts, firing union workers for their union work, stealing away pensions from retirees, first year pay at ANY airline, regional contracts, et al) ear buds don't even make the list. Grow up and join the 21st century with the rest of us.
