The irony for me is that I came from a Cirrus Avidyne/Cessna G1000 background. (Prior to that, I learned instruments in an old 182 with two VORs and a sometimes-working DME unit. It wound up being one of the best and most difficult experiences in flying I've had.) I had plenty of glass/toys time prior to my airline experience. The stuff I had in the single-engine experience was decades ahead of what the ATR has to offer from an avionics standpoint. That being said, I think that I'm a better pilot now that I've had the ATR experience.
 
I miss the ATR...5000+ hours on her at ASA. Yes, in strong winds, it's like a kite. My highest right off the wing...30G42k. My legs were shaking and my left wrist/arm were burning. Couldn't even read the airspeed...it was all over the place...I just flew the pitch attitude I wanted.

Ah...good old days...now everything is fly-by-wire and hydrauliclly boosted. When I went from capt on the ATR to capt on the CRJ200, I over controlled the hell out of the sim for the first few sessions. The ATR was like riding a bucking horse.

I think I did that today in Hilton Head. At least from what I can remember, it's all a blur!
