i just recieved my atp written last weekend and i currently work for a 135 operator. I plan to get hired with a regional in a couple months- so would it not be valid at the regional since its not the original operator that i was working for at the time i recieved it? Someone please clarify.

Not true.. Even though the regs seem to say this, it is a gray area, if you are employed at a 121 carrier, even though your test expired, you can still take the practical under part 91 and it is still valid.

I have a friend who was turned down by an examiner in DFW. The examiner may have been wrong to do so. He took the test again the same day and flew the ride the next day.

Your test is valid for two years. If you still work there in two years your test is valid there. If you don't work there after the two years you may or may not have to retake the test.

I do not believe this is entirely true. If you read the reg carefully, even an expired written is still good if you have completed the approved captain upgrade class at a 121 carrier. If somebody could please post the FAR excerpt, that would be great. Can't do it from this computer and won't be home for a few days. And yes, I did discuss this with a fed about two weeks ago...

Thanks orphic, Just found this in the FAR forum:

61.39 Prerequisites for practical tests.

(b) Notwithstanding the provisions of paragraphs (a)(1) and (2) of this section, an applicant for an airline transport pilot certificate or an additional rating to an airline transport certificate may take the practical test for that certificate or rating with an expired knowledge test report, provided that the applicant:
(1) Is employed as a flight crewmember by a certificate holder under part 121, 125, or 135 of this chapter at the time of the practical test and has satisfactorily accomplished that operator's approved....

I'm by no means a reg guru, so I ask this out of pure curiousity and sincerely want to know the truth.

So, I take my written right after I got hired at XYZ airlines. I work there for 4 years as a first officer. I get furloughed and don't fly for 5 years. I then get hired by ABC airlines and can upgrade 6 months later. If I understand your answer correctly, because I'm once again employed for a 121 carrier, no problem...I could take the pracitcal test? Even though it had been 9 years since I took the written? I guess the pessimist in me says the feds would have an issue with this.

yes, i can easily see that, but i just did it and few months back and it worked for me. I called the FAA and went throught the chain of command and finally got a specialist who approved it. The qualifier was that I was getting it by way of part 91. If you are trying for 121, then you have to go through the PICT class. Very gray area indeed, and I actually think i just got lucky on this one.
