Can somebody give me a reg reference as to when does a pilot need to hold an ATP cert to act as a required crew member. I know that you need an ATP to act as PIC under Part 121 but when else? It is just an insurance thing?
Other than part 121 and the Part 135 operations that DItchdriver quoted, I don't think there are any regulatory requirements for an ATP. Part 125 doesn't require and ATP for a PIC. You can captain a 747 on a private pilot license as long as you have a type rating. Of course, you coluldn't operate it for hire, and you couldn't get paid.
Had a CP once tell me that it wasn't needed, only for pax. He wasn't a 121 CP, nor have I flown 121 so I'm not sure of the regs.. but it did leave me scratching my head wondering if he could in fact be correct.
