Can somebody give me a reg reference as to when does a pilot need to hold an ATP cert to act as a required crew member. I know that you need an ATP to act as PIC under Part 121 but when else? It is just an insurance thing?

Thanks for the help.

I see 135.243 (a)(1)

you need an ATP to serve as PIC in either of:

1) pax-carrying turbojet
2) more than 10 PAX seats
3) multiengine in a commuter operation

Of course, the above applies to 135 only.

Other than part 121 and the Part 135 operations that DItchdriver quoted, I don't think there are any regulatory requirements for an ATP. Part 125 doesn't require and ATP for a PIC. You can captain a 747 on a private pilot license as long as you have a type rating. Of course, you coluldn't operate it for hire, and you couldn't get paid.

What about 121 cargo?

Had a CP once tell me that it wasn't needed, only for pax. He wasn't a 121 CP, nor have I flown 121 so I'm not sure of the regs.. but it did leave me scratching my head wondering if he could in fact be correct.
