It's officially the United States Postal Service, or USPS. They do not operate their own planes; rather, they have a deal with FedEx that if they can use the FedEx planes to carry mail, then FedEx can put drop boxes outside of post offices.
Well, drop boxes and millions of dollars. :)

UPS and Atlas ................ Again

I just returned from a week of flying UPS freight during the holiday peak season, and it was almost ridiculous, as to how many times we were asked or heard the rumors circulating. I was at ONT, EWR, PHL, and SDF, all UPS hubs, and ran into ground staff as well as UPS flight crews at these stations, and was asked the same question by all: "Is it true the UPS is buying Atlas Air?"

It is the seasonal rumor that pops up every December when our aircraft show up on the property. I know of many guys who wish it were true, but I ask them to remember what happened to Challenge Air Cargo when UPS bought their cargo facilities in MIA and the rights to the routes that Challenge operated in Latin America. Many of the Challenge guys eneded up on the street, even though they flew the same equipment, and weren't even given an opportunity to interview with UPS for the many jobs that this acquisition made.

I've been told most Challenge guys were former EAL SCABS. If that's true ... enough said.

Beer Belly,

I get where you're coming from, I wasn't aware of the many SCABS that were there!

Cheers!

Menlo Purchase Adds Urgency to Atlas Rumor Mill ...

With the purchase completion of Menlo Worldwide Forwarding a week or so ago a lot of UPS pilots are justifiably interested/concerned where the needed lift will come from to operate that business. Having read the IPA's scope article it is quite clear to many that this acquisition falls under the IPA's scope and must be flown by IPA crews within 12 months of final purchase.

With no new aircraft acquisition plan announced, each week that passes adds fuel to the rumor fire that UPS might consider an "Atlas type" purchase of ready made freighters versus the cumbersome and drawn out purchase/conversion option. Of course the other option is to fight the IPA in court over our scope claim and continue to subcontract out the lift in the mean time. Since we are already entering our 3rd year of contract negotiations next week, I believe crew members patience with UPS will begin to wear thin shortly if they decide to fight the scope claim. (Scope is being addressed in our next negotiating session in Jan.) Indeed we live in interesting times. We should know in relatively short order which direction the company chooses.

The Atlas stock is climbing pretty fast.

Something interesting is happening.

Stay tuned , same bat time. same bat site

IF something between UPS and Atlas does indeed happen, it most probably won't be good for the Atlas pilots. Look no further than Challenge to see what would happen.
