I left ATC in 85, 3 years after becoming a controller.
Worked with some furloughed guys, and caught the airline bug. I quit to go to work for Comair, the launch customer for the cool new SF340. Eventually got hired at USAir. WOW. I was the happiest guy in the world. Now I go to alot of retirement parties for my controller buds, and I'll be doing this for another 10 yrs+. HMMM. BUT, I've had awesome expriences and made awesome friends all over the country, earned nine type-ratings, worked at three airlines, and still saw my kids grow up. The point is, your buddy should only persue flying if NOTHING else will make him happy. (or bid flight standards!)

EDIT: forgot to mention, the dream flying for him is long-haul international stuff, going all over, to random places (both sketchy and fun) and something a little less mainstream...not drilling holes in the sky with an RJ going ATL-BTR everyday

Been there, done that.

Long haul and random places ain't all roses.
Severe jet-lag in third world countries with broken airplanes is the reality.

My ex-wife quit ATC to fly and I talked her into it.
A fool I was.
Stay with the Feds, that is where the money and job-security is.
Screw the adventure, it does not pay the bills.

Yep. Stay with the FAA. I regret the day I turned down my ATC Center slot for a dumb flying job. By now I could own my own airplane and be flying around for fun but instead I am a broke pilot sitting in a hotel room looking at Flightinfo.........

that avatar kicks a$$, yeah I think my friend would quickly realize the mistake he made after his first pay check and 10 days on the road with 2 only trips the entire time, the adventure does wear off after a bit but if he can upgrade and stick it out it will pay the bills (I dont know what else it will afford though). You have to do whats best for you, no one can decide that but yourself.

Hey where did you get my Driver's License?
