mike72
thanks for the "forthright" impressions of life at ata......what the deal with jfk bases? are there any and do you really only get 10 days off on rsv....the web site says 14days for short call and 12 for long call??....appreciate the feedback...bet indy is cold this time of year!!!!

cheers and warm beer

Mike72

Are you a little disgruntled with ATA? What you said couldn't be further from the truth. I had 15 days off last month with commutable trips. All my reserve lines were 14 short, 12 long call. I have been here since last March and let me tell you ATA definetly does not suck! The pilot group here is a pleasure to work with and our ALPA contract is better than anywhere I have been. Yeah, ATA must really suck thats why there are thousands of resumes coming in. ATA must really suck, while other majors are still losing money we are profitable. Flying brand new airplanes around really, really sucks.

Mike72, where do you work, must be a hell of a place.

For anyone interested in ATA, it is a great place to work with great crewmembers. The future is bright unless you listen to the disgruntled members of society.

Mr. Mike is simply employing the same tactic I used to use before I got on at ATA. Dump on and set up smoke screens in front of airlines that I want to work for but haven't gotten on at yet.

What? Southwest hasn't called you for an interview yet? Screw them! They don't deserve a guy like you. I bet they strip you naked during indoc and make fun of your unit! It can't be like everybody says, they're probably all a bunch of a-holes. You ought to call them up and tell them to take a flying leap. etc.

I talked a number of highly qualified individuals out of trying to get on at United when I was still interested in them. I'll probably go to airline hell.

bidding et al

njcap
do you have pref bidding at ata?....also looking everywhere but can't find solid details about the 737-800 options.....you guys have 32 on the property right! and an option for (40) more?????...As I understand it ata bought 20 from boeing direct and leased the rest (12)....any info is appreciated.....and as to the folks you convinced not to go to united but perhaps to airtran, ata, frontier, etc etc how happy they must be.......who would have thought it!!

cheers and warm beer

No preferential bidding. Planning sends the raw line data to BidPro (bidding software used by a number of airlines) so for $8 a month I can let the program sort the lines for me. This reduced my monthly time spent bidding from 7-8 hours to about 15 minutes. Personally, I'm not too keen on preferential bidding since it totally does away with any bidding conflicts (vacation, training, month to month interface). This would be a tremendous windfall for the company, and all the negotiations with them over this indicate that they want this system with no consideration for the pilot group. I say, if they want it bad enough they can bargain for it during our next round of negotiations in a couple of years.

There has ben absolutely no talk about picking up our options for additional 737's. Our problem is trying to integrate the ones we already have. George deferred five of the seven we had scheduled for delivery next year, and any expansion will be in the 757 fleet. ATA leases all the aircraft in the fleet. The ones we bought were immediately mortgaged to other companies (ILFC, I believe), so George can monkey with the financial numbers more effectively. Please don't take this as criticism of the way he does business, it just means our financials are heavily manipulated to produce the outcome ol Georgie wants. Part of the delay in the renegotiation of the outstanding bonds is probably due to his not wanting to issue more ATA stock (I think he still has plans of taking us private again).

JFK is a virtual base only. The L10's are flying out of BWI and other places, and crews position to them to do their flying. So, in the unlikely event that any more hiring into the L10 takes place, you could really live anywhere you liked in the continental US and be based at JFK.

Mike72--- You crack me up. I'm sure the smiles at the end of your post indicate sacrcasm. Or ignorance.

Working at ATA is great but they like to get productivity out of the pilots. At least until they get manning up. Our CASM is beat only by JB. (Keep in mind we have 10-15 yr capts and JB only has 3 yr capts) We have a great ALPA contract. I know it's available on the web. Our MEC is talking about PB but its only in the planning stages. We haven't decided yet.

Days off vary. At least 12-14 days. We are obligated to be available for one involuntary junior assignment. Lots of volunteer overtime to go around. Senior members get at least 16 days off. Capts making >200K will get some B plan contributions back. Wish I was in that group.

The senior folks on the West coast have a great life. The L-1011 is also another secret. Rumor is we will swell to 1500 pilots (1200 currently).

I love the post about pilots talking others out of a job. Do your own research and make an independent decision. Remember how few wanted to go to JetBlue, Airtran and Southwest in 2000? You can't turn down an offer you don't have.

OK, so when is this Mike72 going to respond to all these [completely warrented] criticisms? He clearly doesn't know what he's talking about.

Working for ATA is great. I have no problem with being productive. It beats being furloughed for 1.5 years.

This started about pay, so here's the pay scales:

FO:

Year

0-1 $37.50
1-2 $69.28
2-3 $86.06
3-4 $95.01
4-5 $104.06

Capt

4-5 $160.09
12+ $18.24

These are all 73/75 rates, slightly higher for the L-10, but who knows how long we'll still have those. 75 hour guarantee, you do the math.

14 days off short call (2 hour) reserve. 12 days off long call (12 hour). As a new hire, you can hold either one.

As for us being around in 30 years? I watched my dad fly for Pan Am and United, both when they were in their prime. And who the hell ever thought anything would happen to them? So who knows. Just go to work everyday and dont lose any sleep over it.

Here's a juicy rumor...

The L-1011 is a great deal, not really secret but kept fairly quiet. Here's the rumor: not only are they not going away soon, we're getting MORE! Not a done deal yet, but don't be surprised to see a few more back on the property next year. Why? The military stuff is Luh-hu-hucrative, the L-10 does it very well, and they're cheap. I heard we can get an L-10 up and running (engines, spar mod, D-check and all) for $10 mil, and we all know how much 73's and 75's cost. Of course, this is pure (10th hand, at least) rumor. But the bottom line is we are surviving, and getting closer to thriving. Great company, great people, and (to get to the point of this thread) plenty easy to get lots of time off or make lots of extra money. All this plus the fact that we're hiring like crazy even in these difficult times makes us a very very attractive prospect for anyone.

There's not going to be any more L-1011's. We'll be down to five shortly, when the next one needs a heavy check. If we cant pay our bills right now, which we cant, we arent buying anymore planes.

Jinx?

Man Texan: I hope you didn't just jinx yourself. Good luck like that should be respected. You never disrespect a streak.

Watch the wording there, you are only obligated if you are wack job enough to answer your phone. We are in no way obligated to do anything we don't want to do; that is to say, if you don't want to be IJAed, don't answer the phone.
