ATA Airlines pilots will vote to cut pay by $6 million in total over the next four months, the pilots' union said this afternoon.

Union officials said the vote may begin Thursday.

The bankrupt airline sought the concession as a way to cut expenses while it continues operations and forms a plan to come out of bankruptcy next summer.

It would be the second set of concessions for the Indianapolis carrier's 1,100 pilots. In late June, the pilots eliminated an annual pay increase. The latest package would cut pay, change some work rules and reduce ATA pension contributions by half.

The new package would be in place for 120 days, giving airline and union negotiators time to work out a permanent contract.

ATA negotiated the cutbacks with the master executive council of the Air Line Pilots Association, which announced the tentative concessions this afternoon.

A typical Boeing 737 pilot with six years' experience at ATA can earn up to about $159,000 a year.

A bankruptcy court in Indianapolis last week approved a complicated ATA bail out plan. It would shift six ATA gates at Chicago Midway to Southwest Airlines.

The Dallas carrier in turn would inject $117 million into ATA and eventually own a 27.5 percent stake in the smaller airline.

Thats bullsh!t. I am a 6yr Captain on the 737 and I make $119,000yr. However the feeling among us at ATA is they can stick the conessions up there as$.

I'm at 7 yr. captain pay, and I made about $125 for 2004, most of which was at 6 year pay. I knew of some L10 FO's during the CRAF period early in '03 that were taking a pay cut to upgrade to CA.

This news story, once again, fails to tell the whole story. There was quite a bit more to last summer's package.

I don't think the "relief" package that we're voting on will pass. Largely due to the fact that the present managment team is on the way out. And, it should be. The package was also largely negotiated with the Airtran buyout, sorry, asset sale :), in mind. One part of the package, furloughs out of seniority, didn't pass the MEC. There's no way it would have passed the membership. We expect some more negotiations in the near future, but they shouldn't waste their time until there's a new team in charge.

One note. The $159K pay is based on hitting the pay cap every month, 100 hours, for the whole year, at about $133 per hour for a B737 captian.

Six year captains can't get close to the cap because we're over staffed in the captain seat and all the open time goes senior. Average line values for the whole year were about 75 hours per month, with a few exceptions for the turn lines.

I was on reserve the whole year. Flew on both of my vacations, but got lousy paying trips.

I don't work for ATA, but some of the traditional Aviators in my unit do. I am very sympathetic about their situation, so I wrote to the fool who authored the tripe.

I'm sure he just wrote what the company told him, but as a writer, he should have checked the facts.

I think some of you ATA types need to write this fool, also.
