Hey Guys,

I am working for a fractional right now and want to get back into the arilines. I am furloughed USAir. I was wondering what the starting pay was for ATA and Airtran. Also what is the pay scale like, what is the upgrade time and both companies, and what is the Cpt's pay like. Any help will be much apprieciatied.
Thanks

Bravo plt,

Can I ask you why you want to return to the airlines? A lot of furloughees are trying to get on with the fractionals. What about fractional flying do you not like and what about airline flying do you miss?

Good luck.

Hey Bravo Pilot,

I think your choices are great - I flew AirTran this weekend and the pilots appeared very happy. I was amazed by the activity at ATL - 717s everywhere....

Still wondering what you miss about the airlines vs. the frax flying you are doing now. What do you not like about the frax flying? Some of us are looking into it and your impressions would be helpful.

Good luck.

Well,
The money for one, I am a cpt. and making a good salary, but there is no pay scale. I will be making about the same today as I will in 5 years. I also want to get into a stand up aircraft with an apu. We have excels so hopefully I can get into that someday. i'm on a 7& 7 Sched. which isn't that bad, but I have a 7month old at home and miss him when I'm gone for seven days. The seven days at home are great but then I have to go out for seven more. Don't get me wrong, it's a good job, and I am thankful to have one and not be on the street. But I just want to get back to the airline type of flying someday. If it doesn't happen soon then thats ok. I can hang out where i am for awhile. I just think in the long run financialy, I will be better off at a good airline ie... AirTran Jetblue, or maybe ATA. For those of you looking Citation Shares is hiring. You have to fill out the online app at www.citationshares.com Also you have to update it often. Every time you update it your application goes to the top of the pile. It's nota bad place to work, but i don't see myself retireing there. There are a couple of other very small issues not worth mentioning. I hope that answered some of your questions.

Both are great airlines with very happy employees.

ATA has bigger equipment and a better payscale. Major hub in Chicago if you can stand the cold.

AirTran is more profitable and growing faster. Upgrade is 2 to 3 years.

Who will be here in 30 years is anyones guess.

Good luck!

NewJet,
If you compare the 737 (ATA) to the 717 (AT), the payscale at AirTran is actually better than ATA if I'm not mistaken.

ATA pays first year FO's 37.50/hr with a min of 75 hours per month and AirTran pays 39.59/hr with a min of 70 hrs per month. Calculated out ATA is slightly higher.

I do know that ATA's 73 payscale and their 75 payscale will be married up in 2005.

All in all both airlines are winners and you would do good to be hired by either one. I believe they will both be around when the dust settles.

On another note, AirTran has suspended classes until further notice. ATA is starting a class next week and two more in October with pilot hiring being 8-12 per month for the foreseeable future.

Many moons ago I had the opportunity to decided between ATA and AirTran (I went to ATA and Im very happy there), I put together a comparsion chart at that time, so here it is, both are great airlines with great people....good luck..

Your numbers are pretty close.

AirTran has no company match on the 401k
Top capt pay is $152.57 at 12yrs on the 717.
1st year fo pay at AirTran is $39.50, $42.75 after 4/1/04.
2nd year pay is $53.49, $55.94 after 4/1/04.
The 10.5% B-fund contribution starts 4/1/01, currently 8%.

What equpt are those numbers based on at ATA? Not the 737?

Thanks for the corrections on Airtran info, Ill change it in my post. as far as ATA compensation, first year is 37.50 (was 36.00 when I was comparing) 2nd year 737 is 63.40 (757 is 63.66). effective july 1, 2005 the 737/757 Capt rates are the same, and 12yr+ is 187.24. Right now upgrade is the same for both 757 or 737 (5years) you decide which one you want to captain on.

also do you mean the 10.5% B-Fund Contribution starts 04/01/04?

any idea what your 73 rates will be?

Yes, the B-fund contribution is currently 8% and goes to 10.5% on 4/1/04. The 737-700's will pay the same as the 717 but the 737-800 (if we get any) will be 13% greater, $172.40 after 12yrs.

I'm on 3 year pay at 70.50 on the 737. In 7/04 it goes to 86.00 and 7/05, 104.00. Then 73 and 75 pay will be the same. L1011 pay is 10-12$ more per hour. 12 yr Capt L1011 is 195.00. If things continue I should upgrade year 4-5 on the 737 at 160.00.

The AirTran info sounds pretty much correct. Two other things to consider when comparing- our contract will be up for renewal after next year . . . . and our growth.

Current predictions are that we will double in size in the next four years.

The only reason they have suspended new hire classes is because there are four aircraft we were supposed to be getting from Boeing this year that they have asked us to defer until next year, so that they can send them to Hawaiian. I am sure when they know when the next aircraft will be showing up, they will re-schedule the classes.

ATA Medical Coverage

Are medical/dental etc. insurance available at ATA from date of hire, or is there a waiting period?

Thanks! Can't wait to start!

AirTran Interviews Resume

I have it from an EXTREMELY reliable source at AirTran that interviewing will "crank up" again Oct 28. We will be putting those hired into a pool. I can't see us increasing the numbers in the relatively small pool that we already have unless the company knows we will need to "gen-up" very quickly in the near future and put a lot of folks through training.

Our new, signifigantly larger, training center is supposed to be completed and start operations by the end of the year. Combine that with quadrupling our presence in DFW starting in January and I think its clear to see that AirTran is getting ready to put alot of people into training the first of the year, or sooner.

Just my somewhat informed two cents.

Cheers!!
