Kalpana Chawla, Ph.D., was born in India but was a naturalized American citizen. Not only was she the first Indie in space, but she was also an active civilian pilot.

According to her NASA Biography, she particular enjoyed aerobatics and flying tailwheel airplanes. She also liked hiking, back-packing, and reading.

She held the following FAA Certificates/Ratings:
COMMERCIAL PILOT
    AIRPLANE SINGLE ENGINE LAND
    AIRPLANE SINGLE ENGINE SEA
    AIRPLANE MULTIENGINE LAND
    AIRPLANE MULTIENGINE SEA
    INSTRUMENT AIRPLANE
    GLIDER
FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR
    AIRPLANE SINGLE ENGINE
    GLIDER
GROUND INSTRUCTOR
    ADVANCED

Quite a long list. She must have had a true passion for flying--that special kind of back-to-basics, stick-and-rudder, seat-of-your-pants flying. This being a civil aviation forum we will mourn her all the more, along with McCool, Husband, Anderson, Brown, Clark and Ramon.

Her retirement dream was to become a bush pilot...

someone who has Ph.D, started off wanting to design airplanes, ending up in a 17,500 mph Orbit around the Earth on the Space Shuttle...and wanting to end her career in retirement as a simply a bush pilot...

it saddens me...

God bless her
