Kalpana Chawla, Ph.D., was born in India but was a naturalized American citizen. Not only was she the first Indie in space, but she was also an active civilian pilot.
According to her NASA Biography, she particular enjoyed aerobatics and flying tailwheel airplanes. She also liked hiking, back-packing, and reading.
She held the following FAA Certificates/Ratings:

Quite a long list. She must have had a true passion for flying--that special kind of back-to-basics, stick-and-rudder, seat-of-your-pants flying. This being a civil aviation forum we will mourn her all the more, along with McCool, Husband, Anderson, Brown, Clark and Ramon.
