Overnighted in MTY last week in the exact hotel area being stressed about here. Dear god I had to walk 3 minutes to the 7-11 to grab a 35 peso 40 oz of Tecate! On the way I passed this strange place full of Hispanic people called 'Chilis'.

There were definitely Mexicans in the 7-11 so my guard was up! Thankfully I was ready to use the hammer fist since I always pay attention to those TSA self defense videos in recurrent. I think the checkout girl was trying to start trouble by blabbering to me in Spanish, but I quickly told her "hey English only senorita!" And the hotel breakfast in the morning, well it was nice but how do I know the waiter that helpfully refilled my coffee 3X wasn't a Zeta!?! Seriously You worry warts probably think the local Walmart is an Al Qaeda target. Grow a pair!

Whata Nimitz doing? WINNING. Well said

Good point, but I'll repeat it;

That's always good advice. But one of our crewmembers was in TAM a while back. Captured video from his hotel room with his phone of a gunfight going on down the street in what otherwise was ALWAYS a safe place to walk. It was night time, so all you could make out was the automatic gunfire. Till shortly afterwards, a car blew up and burned. ANYBODY could have been walking by and got caught in the gunfire that erupted in an area that was otherwise safe.

Until this happened, I felt safer walking around TAM at night than other places in Mexico.

My neighbor just moved his family to Houston from MTY and said it's crazy there. He said his best friend was killed along with his entire family because they were witness to another murder. He said it use to be just between criminals, but now it involves everyone and no one is safe. He said when his wife and daughter came home crying and scared because they saw several severed heads along a highway, they packed it up. He said Mexico is extremely dangerous and unsafe and to avoid it.

You guys are crazy if you think Mexico isn't bad. Problem is it's random and doesn't discriminate. You think ur safe going to the airport in a hotel van? Please.

Ur crazy man. You think your safe because there's a Chillis??? I'm sure the 80 year old women who burned to death playing bingo didn't expect the Zetas to show up and kill 52 of them. Ur an idiot...........

Okay genuis let's look at safety in the Anglo-Saxon culture the last few weeks. There was looting in Notting Hill London. Gang brawls broke out in the parking lot at multiple NFL preseason games. Philly instituted a curfew due to flash youth mobs. Am I an idiot for being in any of these places? It's not about the chilis chicken little, it's about common street sense. I bet you think about crossing the street when u see a black guy with his hat cocked to the side.

If we were staying at the Hilton downtown I would agree with the outrage. In fact I would tell anyone going to a casino or strip club there that they are retarded. But that hotel complex by the airport being a Zeta target!?! GMAFB! I feel safer there then I do in downtown Houston. Big difference in crackheads.

Another family of illegals

Actually, that was my first impression, but I'm happy to report that they're actually professional people that are great neighbors. They've already made some food and brought it over for my fiance and I as a 'thank you' for helping them out when they first moved in. I'd take them over any good for nothing, welfare cash checking, 5 babies, has no clue who the father's are American anyday.

Again, you have no clue what you're talking about. I have family in London and they were scared **itless. They said the people involved were East Africans or Middle Easterners who revolted against social divisions and class in London. They were jobless and had no money....so why not protest. When the thugs and low life criminals saw opportunity for a criminal free for all....well, they turned criminal and rioted and burned it down. The one thing they all had in common was low social standing and no money.
I don't see any Zetas protesting, do you? I don't see them with signs protesting unfair cocaine prices or unfair practices by the Mexcian Federal Police right? Nope, they just kill you and chop off your freaking head. Then they hang you from your nuts from a bridge and mail your head to your mom. After that, they find your family and friends and do a mass execution. Hell, you'd think bingo would be safe.....oh no, they just burn it down and kill everyone.
I can see the comparison...really.
My point is that you aren't safe in MTY or anywhere in Mexico. Just when you think it's impossible for a Zeta or any other drug cartel person to show up at a 7 Eleven while you're buying your beer.......it's Nimitz time or Whatitdoing? time and your arse is dead.

YAWN! I have family/friends in London too. Instead of scared sh!tless some of them were so fed up they started protecting those local businesses that you claim were only looted based on social status. My buddy told me it really wasn't that hard to house a 13 year old when you made it clear you could beat his @ss. He's ashamed more Brits in particular the Metropolitan Police didn't have that clarity.

Glad I've seen and understood a lot more about the world then you. Hopefully you can trade that 4 day trip with a 13 hour MTY lay that also has a 28 hour SAN on day three. After all by touching rubber in MTY you are pretty much signing your death certificate. I'll be well prepped to take it cause I know I'll get a beer and good nights sleep in the death zone known as Courtyard Monterrey Airport.

Never been Never wanna go! It's MEXI-NO for me.

I think it was said best by the Xjet guys. They have been over nightin' in many cities in Mexico, including MTY for a long time. So it can be done. Living in MTY, and seeing everything going down let me clue you guys in on something. Generally speaking the targets of attacks and kidnappings are locals, especially those working within the government. In this instance being either lighter or darker than the general population works to your benefit. So I guess what I am really saying is that if you are brown, stay down. If you are black or white, you should be alright. As long as you are away from downtown I wouldn't sweat it.

I'm just glad there are folks out there who "pride" themselves in not being concerned about their personal safety. If scheduling calls I'll just tell them to go track one of you down.

Truthfully I love mty. It was my fav overnight at asa. Just be smart same as any other city. I remember a gun battle at he days inn Shreveport and no one refused to go there. And does anyone have stats on mem vs mty?

Good points. But the sad truth is, it's all about being in the WRONG place at the WRONG time. As I mentioned in TAM, you could be in what was a SAFE place at a WRONG time. And as the drug/cartel violence escalates into areas that were at one time safe, there are a WHOLE lot of WRONG times happening in what USED to be safe places.

just witnessing something (like on the van to the hotel) could get ya killed, I ain't going, you do it :erm:

plus "The Palm" says it ain't safe! :)

Has anybody consulted with The Palm about this? If his intel says it's safe, then I'm OK with it.

Then again, with crew costs being so high, maybe losing a few people off the payroll will help the bottom line?

Confirmed on ALPA. MTY is not safe.

Memphis does seem to be one of the more dangerous places in the U.S.:

"For Memphis, we found that the violent crime rate is one of the highest in the nation, across communities of all sizes (both large and small). Violent offenses tracked included forcible rape, murder and non-negligent manslaughter, armed robbery, and aggravated assault, including assault with a deadly weapon."

For 2010, there were 86 murders in Memphis.

In MTY, there were 828 murders in 2010, but we're on track to DOUBLE that in 2011.

For those who say MTY is perfectly safe, I hope you are never a captain on any plane I ride on. Your risk analysis understanding needs work.
