A single list was negotiated as part of Section 6 negotiations. That having been said, ASA might not be able to copy this path with SkyWest now. Considerations are:ALPA did a single list with Mesa and Freedumb....Feedumb was not union??? It is leagally possible!!!!
(1) Freedom was a new creation of management and was very small, if even in operation when a single list was negotiated. It was brute force negotiations. In ASA's case, we are a smaller group negotiating to force a merger with a larger group with a hostile management team at SkyWest. SkyWest seems resolute to beat an ALPA organizing drive and would likely be even more adverse to a Single List with ALPA as the pre-agreed bargaining agent.
(2) The SkyWest pilots have yet to vote for a union. ALPA may not (I'm leaning towards probably) have the legal ability to "represent" the SkyWest pilots without their vote.
(3) This issue is above the pay grade of the ASA MEC. ALPA National has to take action to push one list, under the National Mediation Board's rules.
So we are stuck with these facts that harm our case for OneList:
- SkyWest guys have not voted for representation
- SAPA is not "representation"
- SkyWest Management is on a jihad and does not want ALPA. The chances of negotiating voluntary recognition are slim to none.
A wise man once told me that "No one can organize a union like management can." SkyWest Management continues to take action that damages the excellent reputation they used to enjoy. In fact, they are starting to appear worse than Frank Lorenzo, who earned himself the distinction of being the most hated man in the industry. At least Frank was responding to a tough situation when his airlines were in dire straights. Jerry Atkin just wants more profits than he already has - simple greed. The more Mr. Atkin fails to commit to his employees, the more he destroys ASA, the more he appears to be a lying, greedy, manipulator (regardless of the truth) the more likely it is ALPA will be on the SkyWest property.
I want a Single List. The best way to get there now is to keep the pressure on ALPA National, through our elected Representatives. The political process is all we have to effect change since this would have to happen at the NMB level anyway.
